"No, if you have filings, all owned, leased or anything that would haul under that authority must be scheduled on the policy, due to the insurance company being required guarantee the public liability. I don’t think they are putting all of the requirements in that article. But, feel free to call a Great West representative and see if they can shed more light on the subject for you."

I sent this in response: "But...it won't haul until I call and say it is hauling and thereby switch from my current truck to the truck that is designated as a spare?"

From an insurance company's standpoint a truck or trailler is an asset folder to be filed, not a tangible thing.

But do you actually have to insure it? I mean, if I'm with Progressive, and say I want to insure the standby truck with OOIDA, but I never actually insure it, is it illegal or something? Serious question. Because I have no plans on insuring two trucks if only one of them is currently capable of causing an insurance claim.

    ChevyCam and Mattflat362 Thank this.

I think I am overthinking this....if we have a "spare" truck...no one even needs to know if it is safely parked? We would just call our agent one day and add/swap trucks...and then un-do it the next week or month or whatever, right?

    This is my understanding.

The legality will only come into it if you are making payments and the leinholder has a clause that states it must be insured.

Guy i run for has about 6 (personal) trucks but only insures the 1 or 2 he curtently drives

This will perhaps change if we are talking about buisness insurance instead of road insurance
