I've got a years experience driving fuel and chemical tankers. However, I got injured and can't throw the hoses and loading heads around any more. I've been trying to get an OTR job but it seems like the better companies would rather have someone with 3 months OTR than a years tanker experience. The only companies left are the lower tier i.e. CR England,jb hunt,Stevens etc. I'd like some advise on where to go to get my 6 month to a years OTR experience so I can get on with a decent company. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gosh man, with your experience, I would think you would be better off looking at one of the smaller more regional companies. That is if there are any in your area. I can't imagine that a smaller company would not be more than willing to take you on.

All of these "worst" companies are probably "must do's" for a newbie, but you are a bit away from that catagory. I realize that with your physical problems, that LTL probably is not for you. But you should have some smaller outfits around, maybe even reefer outfits.

Good Luck, and again, unless you are desperate, stay away from the driver mills.

Uh-oh. I went back and re-read your post. I thought you had "years" of experience, guess I did not look closely enough at it the first time. Shoot, with just one year, and then being injured, you may be lucky to get on with one of the driver mills.

I think just about all the companies require you to lift 50lbs. Of course with gasoline you'll never come close to that if you roll your hoses. How much can you lift and what type of gasoline hauling did you do before? Was it common carrier, dedicated, or majors?

There's always people buying gasoline and the slow down is in cities that have alot of tourism. If you can lift 50lbs then I can give you more info on gasoline and where the money is.

i Pulled tanker for a few months and it was vacume tanks in the nasty muddy oilfield and I can't think of a much easier work if you can't manage that and my job was harder then most tanker gigs. even pulling a hundred fet of hose through mud to your calves is easier then breaking down 45k pounds of product at a grocery warehouse.
dry van jobs rarely require unloading but the companies will NEVER guarante you of this

When I hauled fuel I worked for a common carrier delivering to stations. When I hauled chemicals I drove a 4 axle tanker delivering to factories primarily. I've check with reginal carriers and like I said no OTR no job. Marten-4 months OTR, Knight-3 months OTR etc. I can lift 50 lbs just not all day long every day.

Did you pull out of Seattle? You know you can move up if you did. You also know how the majors are. Are you hurt that bad that you can not do the work anymore or are you just tired of city driving?

Man you can have those thick black vacume hoses. I'll stay with the ultra lite hoses and no pumps.

I pulled out of Seattle. As far as the health issue, I can still do the job it's just that it's very painful. The city driving is part of it as well. I came to this profession later in life so the stamina issue is there as well. I figured if I got a job that was primarily driving, which doesn't bother me, I would be better off.

The only thing I could tell you is to relocate to an area where the gasoline is hauled at distances like the desert. Utah has alot of drivers that have to come to Las Vegas to load and they spend alot of time on the road. And you know they'll have super tankers. AZ is good for long longs also. Other than that hauling gasoline might be too limited for you.
