I am an S Corp. truck driver who works exclusively hauling cars for a small family owned business in a metro area. I don’t own my truck. I get 1099s. No benefits through owner.
The last four years, the owner of the business has Employed a dispatcher. Recently the owner has told myself and the half a dozen other drivers who haul for him that he wants us to chip in and paint the dispatcher so he doesn’t have to incur the cost. He assures us we would be able to deduct that extra 20,000 or so each om taxes. He’s a good guy, the owner, But we have concerns about what this entails for us. Anyone heard of this? What are we signing on for if we agree to it? We are kind of being told this is what he’s going to do and that we don’t have a choice. At least half of us, three, are concerned. We are wondering how this might affect Worker’s Compensation insurance or how we might incur other expenses if we’ve got an employee on our hands. Also, just the logistics and headache of taking care of someone. We mostly work back to back trips.
Thanks.
Who pays dispatcher?

Well your situation is all ready shady. So basically its just more icing on the shady cake. If you are happy covering your employers expenses already, then this will just get more of the expenses off his plate. Just do like your employer and pay your dispatcher on a 1099. That way everyone is getting the shaft.(Except your employer, he will be laughing to the bank)
Opendeckin, Expeditor, TallJoe and 3 others Thank this. -
I no like this.
Company Owner gone crazy.
Find some other outfit fast. I don't mind participating in some sort of act that saves the company once in a blue moon but when they get into my wallet to subsidize a big mouth to tell me how badly to run a load.... it's all wrong. The pyramids would stand on the upside down. Let's make it right. Or get out.
Im sorry the owner is sunk on his expenses and payroll etc. If he cannot stand it then he can very well dispatch at the desk hisself. Which will help him alot with that phone therapy with all of you.
My writing is poor today, but there is that. Be the last day I pay wages of another out of my own. IF the company cannot make enough to meet all payroll, fire some people until they can. (And you get out of the way with a new job possibly.) -

I know those good guys with vacation homes and boats in FL - good for you because you make his life good with your own expense. Dispatcher's pay is his lousy obligation. Idk what you got to lose, if you leave him or he fires you but first I hear that a driver, even on 1099, pays for a dispatch.
X55Logistics and bigsnake5 Thank this. -
If you’re paid on a 1099 you don’t have workers comp.
Opendeckin and bigsnake5 Thank this. -
But if you don't have a contract, then find a place that has one because it is absolutely stupid not to have one with any carrier and fmcsa regs, there has to be one.bigsnake5 Thanks this. -
What will be next? You pay half the fuel bill? Just because it would be a deduction doesn’t mean it will put money in your pocket.
Opendeckin, bigsnake5 and TallJoe Thank this. -
exhausted379 and bigsnake5 Thank this.
