I did the same thing got my class A before i turned 21 years of age. As soon as i turned 21 i went to work for my friend who runs 4 trucks on a dedicated run. Cant be happier. I would say i got really lucky. Good luck to you its hard out here right now to get a decent job.

    Thanks Powder Joints,
I sure don't want to side-step any of the "in the class" training provided by driver training schools. I just know myself well enough to know that I learn better outside of the classroom. As I said in the thread starter, I would make sure I studied everything that PDTI certified schools require. I'm not suggesting that PDTI schools are God's gift to driver training. I do think the PDTI curriculum guide has to be a pretty thorough source for detailing what a driver needs to know-at least as far as "head knowledge" is concerned. But nothing, absolutely nothing, can be a substitute for "live, in your face" experience. The Knight driver you talked about in your post bears that out.
I appreciate your willingness to share your experience with me and others,
    Oldnew....

The behind the wheel is most important IMHO. The book work do it on your own.
Good Luck, God Bless.. When you first get to the truck mark the door with a arrow up. If at the end its still up you had a good day.

I've been through school and I'm now on the job hunt. My sense is that you will have an up hill battle trying to get a job unless you know someone. The company that I'm interested in would not work on my application until I faxed them a copy of my certificate.

I could have gotten my cdl without a school just as you're wanting to do, even had the truck lined up for the road test but once I found out about the need for a certificate those plans changed.

    Gook luck.

Think back I remembered a relevant story told by my instructor. In school you have your cdl in your pocket before official graduation. One student from a previous class bailed once he got his cdl license and never finished school to get his certificate.

As the story goes, he already had a job lined up through a family friend all he needed was a cdl or so he thought. He was driving for about a month when he was called into the office and asked where his certificate was as they couldn't find it on file...gulp! He had to go back through school all over again just to get the piece of paper.

it met the rules ie:GVW over 26,001 and trailer gvw over 10k and I already had a B with air brake they don't let it go anymore as we tried with my buddy Kid as they wouldn't let him take it in a tanker and then after a couple months they changed there mind on that aswell

on a little side note the certificate of school is not a big deal to me when I hire someone at all as a matter of fact truck driving schools I do not consider it a plus as I have never been impressed by the training I would rather do it from scratch then waste time undoing there damage

I can tell you I know several hotshotters with a Class A CDL that used a pickup with a trailer with GVWR over 26,000 lbs.
For example note restriction L1 No air brakes . Class A Veh .

it would be an easy mistake to make when I did it many moons ago I had to make the dot drag out the rule book I was right but it kinda torqued them off a bit
