When I went to talk to a Tech School who offers CDL A, they told me if I can pass a drug test if they ask me to take one on the spot. Curious if they were bluffing or they are serious. I thought the employers are the ones to test for these usually pre-hire? Does the MVA test for drugs as well?
who tests for drugs: employers or schools as well?

It would be an excellent idea for all trucking schools as well as all trucking companies to aggressively test students, applicants, and veteran drivers alike for all drugs.
It would also be an excellent idea for motor vehicle departments, in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Marshall Islands to aggressively test students, applicants, and veteran drivers alike for all drugs.texasbbqbest, Hitman, Tonythetruckerdude and 4 others Thank this. -
If you're concerned about passing a drug test, truck driving is not for you. HOWEVER, if you used-to-use but are now walking down a drug-free path, this job might work for you IF you keep your nose clean... because (IMO) you will-get-caught if you're using and driving a truck.
mje Thanks this. -
They drug tested in my school towards the end if the classroom training. A few days before we actually started driving. Our class magically shrunk by about 15 % before the road training.
What someone did before trucking doesn't matter to me. But how could you expect to get into this type of career and not expect to get tested. Get clean and stay clean or find a different careerTonythetruckerdude, Lepton1 and drvrtech77 Thank this. -
I got tested during school and passed with flying colors. We did have one student who was suspected of being intoxicated while we were doing pretrip inspections before getting started with field maneuvers. He was pulled aside and tested on the spot. We didn't see him for the rest of class and i couldn't be happier.
No reason to be intoxicated driving a 4 wheeler let alone a truck.semi retired semi driver, Tonythetruckerdude, bubbagumpshrimp and 1 other person Thank this.
