I have just recently graduated from school and have my shiny new CDL with all endorsements. I am just waiting for the fingerprint / TSA stuff to be returned. I applied for a passport and am awaiting that.
So here is the basic dilemna. I paid for my own training, as I did not want to be in debt to any school or company like USA or PAM. Before , my first day I had a pre-hire from SNI for a fixed rate and tuition reimbursement. I thought everything was wonderful. However, upon graduation, I picked a job running closest to my home, but was told that it was not eleigible for that rate nor tuition reimbursement, let alone both. I spent the last couple of days poking around these forums as well as others, and since I did not want to be engaging with 20 different companies, I picked two who I thought had a very stable company, great reputation among employees, and other truck drivers. I contact these other companies and based on the information I gave them, I would be eligible to come to work for them and could start orientation immediately. So here is the basic set of circumstances from each, and while in my head I am leaning a specific way, I am hoping something you all might have to offer will either convince me I made the right decision, or at the very least sway me away from making a critical mistake.
First I will briefly explain I am 36 years old, in good physical condition, no medical problems, no drug use or alcohol. I cant remember when i had my last ticket, but I know it was NOT in the last 5 years because I checked with BMV. I never had a ticket except speeding. I have never been charged with any crime. I would place some value on being home more , and ease of starting each "shift" of driving, either by having a very close terminal or being able to bring my truck home. I have four basic scenarios available to me, without doing any more research , legwork, or interviews.
#1 SNI hauling dedicated to NYC. Home weekly and pay is lowest of all choices, but offset with most miles, and other bonuses such as stop charges, unloading bonus, NYC bonus etc. Will NOT help pay for my schooling. Will be 5 on/2 off.
#2 SNI hauling tanker. Pays .03 more but is about 300-400 miles less a week. No other way to earn money besides driving. Will help pay my schooling cost. Will be on 14 /off 2.
For both SNI, training and orientation would last 3-5 weeks.
#3 Crete has a dedicated route paying most. Miles are reportedly 2500. Out 14-21 days then home 3-4 days. Will help offset schooling cost. The training takes upwards of ten weeks overall .
#4 Roehl Transport has a OTR openings that pay in between SNI and Crete. The miles are reportedly 2300-2500. I would be out 11-17 days then home 2 days. They will help offset schooling cost. The training alone lasts roughly 5 weeks total.
Any help or input is appreciated. I had made an extremely long post that I edited, because all of the information was very specific in my first post. I guess what I am hoping to hear is how the companies treat their employees, what has the best growth path for earning more per mile, keeping plenty of loads available, and keeping up with maintenance issues. IS there red flags for any of those companies? Will they all keep their word to me? I am taking extra time at this point of my career to make the right choice. I am not looking to work for someone just to gain experience, I want to pick the right company the first time, and stay there. Is there some factor I did not address above that is essential to consider?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Roadraider.
wow sounds similar to my situation. I'm 38 though, lol and have a family to raise. I got my CDL upgrade from Great Lakes Truck Driving School in Ohio on my own as I also didn't want to be tied down to a bottom feeder company either
I am running into road blocks with companies wanting 1 to 2 yrs experience... thanks to another forum memeber I just applied to Nick Strimbu Trucking in Brookfield Oh, but I think they have a terminal in Columbus. You can call and talk to Heather H.
Good luck in getting a job....I know I need it -
I have offers, just too many options. I am trying to find help narrowing down what would be best for me long term.

Crete is an excellent company! My cousin drove for them. If you can get in with Crete don't hesitate! They have fairly strict hiring qualifications but you say you have a pretty clean mvr so they might be interested in you. I believe the other drivers on this post are pretty happy with Crete.
