Its a catch 22. If you are involved in an accident and you have been making safety sensitive repairs to the truck, they may hold liable for that...since you were not certified.

Of course, if you are certified, they are going to make the case that should have known better because you were certified and obviously knew what you were doing.

Show me the law that says I have to be certified to do repairs on my truck. if there was such a law would landstar and Mercer allow their truck owners to list themselves as the person doing the repairs and service on the maintenance reports?

    Curious,
Next time your at your local dealer or Shop, Any dealer or shop, See what percentage of their mechanics are actually "certified" and by who???

Doesn't matter what kind of dealer, PeterPaccarWorth or Volvack, GMC, Dodge, BMW, Kubota, Intersmational, kia Cat, DeereJohn or whatever.

Doesn't matter what size shop, one mechanic or three shifts.

Certification is generally a worthless piece of paper that the big chains, Monroe Mavis Jiffy Love T/A J Midass use to try and woo your confidence.

As always there are exceptions but a piece a paper don't make a good wrench....period

common sense, basic tools and the correct service manual is all thats required

As a "former" mechanic in a heavy equipment dealership, I can tell you with absolute certainly that only ONE person has to be "certified" to work on a particular brand. I recall once that I was asked to do warranty work on a Case loader that had a Cummings engine in it. Informed shop supervisor that I knew nothing about that engine and was not certified to work on Cummings engines. Was told and shown documents that said only ONE person had to be Cummings "certified" to do warranty work. So, yes indeed, certification is a bunch of BS!!!
If you will look in FMCSA handbook, you find to be "certified" for brakes and other stuff, all that is need is the experience. LOL

As a former USMC mechanic and fleet leasing company,( Rollins, Penske, General, Yellow) mechanic of 25 years. There are 2 certificates that all these companies required. They are on line and down loadable. Brake inspector certificate, and annual inspector certificate. They ask you to check a box and sign. Experience is one of the questions.
