Ive wanted to be a professional driver for as long as I've been able to drive. I dont have the experience and Im looking into company sponsored training. Ive read so many post about lots of different companies and dont know where to start. Ive read the good posts and bad. Who's best for a wanna be? I considered Steven's, but Im having second thoughts about them after reading some of these posts. I thought about Swift as a starter company but man thats too many bad posts. What do you think? I dont what to make a bad choice, my family is at stake here. Your advice will be GREATLY appreciated.

If your family is at stake stay away from the trucking industry altogether . Carriers chew newbies up and spit them out . Do you really want to be away from home for weeks at a time for a $400 paycheck ?
kickin chicken and carlinsodak Thank this. -
Sorry i just realized i posted at the wrong section. should have been in the newbe sect. i dont want to be chewed and spit out but i want to obtain my cdl and i dont have the funds to get one on my own. plus ill never truely be happy w/ my life if i dont try. i cant drive down the road w/o wishing that i was the one behind the wheel of every truck that i see. i go on websites like peterbilt, kenworth, freightliner, etc. just to imagine myself behind the wheel. You have to start somewhere. im just gonna have to stick it out to get the experience and move on to some place better. i called a trucking school here in Oklahoma and pleasantly surprised that the recruiter for the school advised me that i could come and learn w/ them, but im not promised a job. And if i took out a loan to pay for school, id be looking for work and trying to pay back the loan all at the same time. by the time i found something, i would have forgotten most of what ive learned. yeah the trucking industry is a harsh industry, from what ive heard, but im willing to sacrafice and do whatever i have to to live out my dream of becoming a professional driver.

There is no written law that says that a rookie has to get chewed up and spit out.
You can do anything you set your mind to. Want to truck or are you just looking for work? If you want to truck, you wont be too worried about home time.
Imagine joining a viking raiding party. Youre going to get on a canoe and paddle across the ocean. You can be metro and complain about the weather, the weight of your armor, and homesickness. Or you can go sit with the old raiders and listen to war stories and battle scars. The metro will want the town theyre going to raid to love and respect them. The old raiders will take what they want, rape and pillage, and throw back a few beers after battle.
So which group do you want to sit with at the truckstop...the guys that cry about freight and who are scared of everything OR the guys telling their war stories and showing battle scars?
You can do anything you set your mind to. I worked for Swift and made $1000 a week. Find out the rules to that company's game and see if you can play by those rules. If you cant, go elsewhere.leannamarie, ang1sgt, kinnakeet04 and 3 others Thank this. -
Thank you. I still havent made up my mind on where to go but maybe leaning toward Swift but still unsure. Still reading posts. Until then I guess ill stick w/ American Long Haul. Its the closest im gonna get til i make up my mind where to apply. Hoping to know by July. i hear a few things and my cousin was driving for them for a while. He doesnt recommend them because of his experience w/ them. He quit because they said that they would send him on a route toward home for Christmas, then sent him to New Hampshire. We're in Tulsa,Ok. But Im hard headed and will still consider them. I thought about Steven's but i think i onlt like them because they put u in my second favorite truck...T-2000. Ill be out there soon, cant wait!!!!!!!

Don't listen to everyone telling you not to get in the business. Yes, it's hard right now but I'm a rookie and I live in FL...a double whammy. I got a OTR job with a good company (not Werner, CR England or the like). Plenty of miles too. Stick with it, and if you have what it takes...you'll find a job. A lot of these people that can't get a job have reasons (speeding tickets, something on their background etc). Read closely and you will see what I'm talking about. Good luck

Will64, u should try going down to your local unemployment office and see if you can get some funding through your state to pay to get your cdl. It would be better than having to take out a loan and not being guaranteed a job to pay it back.

go to rip off report.com
it's like the drivers version of DAC....and you can hear some scathing reports about how companies treat drivers...
