From what I have read on all of the posts about all of the different training companies it pretty much a crap shoot either way no matter which one you pick... I have read on here that the best thing to do is to call all of the different ones that you might want to consider and see which offers the things that mean the most to you.. miles/hometime/pay/training etc... If you search through all the threads enough you'll practically find 2 or 3 negatives for every positive for every company.. the negatives could be true or could be that the poster just didn't click with the company and quit or got canned so has a chip on their shoulder..
The option of checking with the local Unemployment office to see about grants etc for training is a good idea then the options of companies opens up a little more...
For me I don't have the assistance option for reschooling and don't have the funds so training school is my only option.. After kicking around ideas for companies for about 6 months (and getting the approval from the wife) I finally opted to put an app. in with Swift beings there is a Terminal about 45 minutes from home and they have the "comfort zones"... I am dying to get back behind the wheel, but at the same time if Swift turns me down (a sad thought) I'll just continue with the normal low paying job I already have until can weasel funding for a refresher course to get my Class-A back and then will look for something local hauling equipment or something...
Good luck in your searches and best of luck on your choice![]()

Im still looking into different companies. Still havent decided on one yet. I have a family member who wants me to get my cdl so bad that he's willing to pay for it himself. Sounds good right!? Im a little skeptic because I feel as if Ill miss what a school has to offer as far as safety regulations and state laws. To take the test and take the test at a dmv w/ his truck sounds good and cheaper but i dont know. Its sounded great a few days ago but then a very sad thing happened on I-44 a few days ago that has me thinking. A 76 year old truck driver was driving down the Will Rogers Turnpike and hit some cars going about, reportedly 75 MPH. The wreck was described as "like a war zone". Bodies everywhere, even children. The wreck killed 10 people. They didnt find the 9th victim til a few hours later after they started clearing most of the wreckage. The 10th died later # the hospital. For more info, go to Tulsaworld.com. Thats where most of the info i have came from. Anyway, i got to thinking that, here is a good experience driver who probably was well trained and he still caused an accident that ruined lives for ever. I thank my family member for helping me but i want to make sure that that doesnt happen to me. Going to a certified school doesnt mean that this wont happen to me but i have a better chance to prevent it. Just wanting anyones opinion. Read the book, get my cdl and let my family member train me for a while or go to a company that will train me and have more of an obligation. I can already guess what response ill get but needed to ask. Thats why im the wanna be and you're the professionals.

that was a good idea. i tried it in 2007 and was approved but at the time i had some things going on at home that prevented me from taking the loan.(that i didnt have to pay back) i deeply regret. but now i have a decent paying job and make too much to try it again. household cant make more than $23,000 in a years time. w/ my wife we make double that. -
Have you looked into Prime. They don't take out loan payments. # 6 mos you owe half; # 13 mos you're clear. One week to get your permit, then on the road with an instructor. Pass your skills test and run team with a trainer for 2-3 mos @600/wk minimum. Go solo or team after that. Might be worth a look for you.

Total Negativity in almost every post.newbie67 and truckerwannab Thank this. -
I wanted to reply to the post and let you know that in many cities there are trucking schools. And there are also special programs that even will help pay for it. Like here in South Dakota, there is a program called, WIA, that pays the 3.5 grand for the trucking course/training. And you get the CDL and before you are done go on a trip with an experienced trucker and get some drive time in as well. And you go through the whole works in the school. WIA is a federal program available to anyone I believe. I have not went through the school yet, as I also just posted recently to the newbie area under wannabe asking some questions, but I was told it's the way to go on the forum post.

I need to apologize to RickG.
He is right, forget about trucking. -

With all of the responsibilities and regulations you have to deal with, that is ridiculous.
