UPS is union....often hired, and trained internally..not sure sbout the recent LTL places UPS recently bought though...
Many fedex...3 different parts...are contractors....like fedex ground, formly rps..

UPS is definitely trained internally. 1.5 yrs ago when I did my refresher, they had a guy from UPS who working the docks but was allowed to obtain his CDL because he would drive once he hit 21.

I am unfamiliar with Fed Ex but often see they require a year on the job listings.

To make this determination yourself, drive clear across Wyoming on I-80 following a major snow storm ... tally the fedex's in the ditch and tally the UPS's in the ditch. Total these counts (use a calculator if you need to) ... To save you some time, I've have done this, and it is with this knowledge that I can make the following statement ...

"In my 'professional' opinion, any monkey with a 6th grade education, no understanding of physics and inertial energy, and is willing to pay the ridiculous lease payments can get hired on at fedex."

I took part in a recent driver's round table discussion of industry issues (meaning a bunch of us at a truckstop with nothing better to do than talk #### on the radio) where one of the drivers mentioned that he'd noticed a large number of the accidents he's seen that involved FedEx trucks.

I agree. Last winter driving the Pacific Nortwest I didnt see any UPS drivers laid over but I did see 2 Fed Ex drivers laid over in the ditch, but because I cant stand unions whenever I do ship a package I ship it Fed Ex!!!
