That's laugh. If ya own ya own a computerized car ya have one. I'm sure it's the same with bikes.

Well. yes and no. Some ECU/ECM's have the ability to record and store a limited amount of data for a limited amount of time. Usually it is centered around technical aspects that have an impact on the operation of the vehicle. I'm not aware of any that have the ability to say track location of the vehicle.

Now On Star, or your cell phone depending upon how you have the phone set up, most definitely records periodic GPS location points along with the time and date.

I don't remember the TV show I was watching, but two guys are talking, one is a techno geek, the other just an ordinary Joe type. "Joe" is having a rough time accepting some of the pitfalls that come with new technology and the techno geek says "I think it's just so quaint that "Joe" still has an illusion of privacy."

From what I've read, the "black box" would just record accident data.

Curious to know when and if these boxes would start communicating directly with the scales and other dot facilities, sending info like break and tire temps - and worse - gps, drive times, and speeds?

The technology definitely exists to do everything you mentioned and more. Much, much, more. At this point it comes down to the need and 'benefits' of that information becoming worth the cost it would take to record and transmit the data from the source to whomever is wanting to see it.

Next time you get a chance watch a formula one, NASCAR or Rolex series race where they are using on board cameras and sending telemetry from the cars to your TV screen. These very basic systems show throttle/brake application percentages, vehicle speed, engine speed, etc. It is only limited by where the sensors are placed (what info do they want) and with these systems low signal strength, which is easily corrected.

It is entirely conceivable that should someone want to, a small camera and microphone could be installed in a truck, along with sensors that could monitor almost and practically any information at all, then transmit all of it quite literally anywhere in the world. A mile or two in any direction from a scale house ain't no big deal at all...

research peoplenet onboard satellite systems you'll be shocked. These are what the DOT/FMCSA is pushing for companies to have.

honestly i think csa is a good thing. it seems the only people that DON'T want it to come about are the drivers that probably shouldn't be on the road to begin with. you know who you are- logs not up to date, truck not in proper working order, no hours to run with. It seems the drivers that actually follow the rules don't mind csa. The drivers that like to run illegally don't want it to come about and those are the drivers that will be the first to go when csa hits and i say good. we don't need fatigued drivers out on the road read to fall asleep and kill someone or themselves. freight isn't that important honestly. you can make money running within the law. i know truckers that have been doing this for 40 years and they follow the law to the T and make a #### load of money. i myself just started a little less then 2 months ago but i plan to always run within the law. Ive seen people make money doing it so i don't see a reason to run outside it.

to those of you that think you cant make any money running legally well to you i say ill see you down the road and ill say hi when you hand me my burger and fries.

to the whole black box thing- grow up honestly. this is 2010 almost 2011. if you carry any piece of technology such as a cellphone, gps, computer, laptop, mp3 player then you are being recorded at some point in time. they have satellites that can zoom in from space and look at a mole on the back of your neck and see how many hairs are growing out of it. if you think they don't know where you are and what your doing you live in a fantasy world.

    Hey :
Hate it or like it does not really matter. We have all been tracked to some degree..
Most scales take your picture even when they are closed.
    Road side cameras are everywhere.
Toll boths, fuel islands, and at most major intersections .
Most mountian passes have many or at least multiple cameras.....

Almost all truck computers already record recent and high and low speeds.
In fact in each gear.. How long you were in that gear etc..
It all depends on what happens and just how far "they " want to go with an issue. If someone is killed in an accident you can bet they will find all.
Weather or not that can prove anything of fault it can and will show a pattern of how you drive and that may say more than all other info they find. That is what they would use against you.

I highly doubt that anyone would go this far to prove a log violation .
Your GPS also has a{Track Back } feature and will replay previous trips along with the speed you traveled them at. And every move you made.

You may wish and want all you can .. The Black box has been here all along.
Just a matter of how far "they" are willing to go to get you.
For now we are still free. But it is coming faster and faster when we will not be and most of the O/Os will just sell out and stay home.
The new breed out there has not made it yet and will be subject to what ever comes there way . You are already competing with foreign drivers that will work for much less than you even can and yet way more than they ever dreamed of in their home land.

I am not being an ### about this rather stating the simple truth. The new wave will not go away with drivers speaking up and out , rather only after "They" see that "their" new trick or idea of cheap labor did not work again.
To put this in terms that maybe some of you can understand. You are already out numbered. By cheap labor foreigners working for nothing but not willing to give up what they have never had before.
They now have the American dream of not seeing a gun put in there faces at check points .. And bullet holes in their trucks . They have it made here.
If you find this hard to understand go where they came from and see for your self.
Talking with a Russian driver , he told me he makes right at 10 times what he ever made back home. Per week. You do the math and figure out why he is here . Do any of you really think he wants to strike or complain. ????
    Why would he ??

The drivers that like the HOS and EOBR's are fat, lazy #$$ drivers (5'2" 400 lbs.)laying up in the truck stops fighting over who will be first to the buffet table. The average person sleeps 7 to 8 hours a night.
