Not an indictment, just a question. As an example, the most successful businesman and smartest mechanic that I know lives next to the VFW in a trailer so he can stagger home without driving. He can be found passed out every night at the bar at the VFW long before closing. During the day, he is one of the most brilliant mechanics that I know. He won't do a job unless he does it right. Never cuts corners. Always honest. Won't rip you off. So I'm thinking that there may be a correlation between high intelligence and drinking or maybe it's just specific to the trade. And I have noticed this with other very good mechanics. Any thoughts or observations?
Why are brilliant mechanics often drunks?

No, your observation is off, if it were as strongly correlated as you think, my neighbor would be a LOT better at his job.
What you will find is moderate alcohol or drug use can increase creative capacity, but at excessive amounts, usually diminishes performance in every fieldRideandrepair, JoeyJunk, Brettj3876 and 4 others Thank this. -
Because they have to deal with truck drivers.
SL3406, Cattleman84, Crude Truckin' and 27 others Thank this. -
You ever deal with the insanity that engineers come up with all day at work, I'd be that way too. There's no real correlation there though, I know a few guys who could about start a rock and drive it around like their name is Fred Flintstone, they don't drink at all for the most part.

You know me?

Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Maybe there's more to that guys story than what you know.. maybe something from his past has him drinking every night..
Maybe the reason he is a good wrench is because he put's 120% effort in to his work and it might be the 1 thing that makes him feel like life is worth waking up for daily.. theres alot of reasons people are functioning alcoholicsalds, Crude Truckin', Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
I'd ask @AModelCat but he's hung over right now.
Cattleman84, AModelCat, Crude Truckin' and 13 others Thank this. -
i was about to post this exact same response. It is true most engineers do not have common sense.Cattleman84, Northern Nomad, Rideandrepair and 3 others Thank this.
