Ya know I kinda have to agree with the OP... The 3 best automotive mechanics I've ever dealt with have all had severe alcohol problems at some point in thier lives. They are all mostly sober now, at least to the point that they dont get #### faced everyday anymore.

One is a good friend, and the only thing that has kept him out of ASE shops is the fact that he doesnt do well with with book learning, and has never went through the process to get ASE Certified.

Another is my prefered mechanic for my POVs. He's worked on all my vehicles except my daily driver, which hasnt had a need of work above my own knowledge or capabilities. He #### near died several years ago, got super sick with something pretty nasty. I cant remember now what it was, but I know that alcohol made it worse. Thats when he decided to get sober. He does great work, and will do it like you want it done... You want it to be just like factory or better? He'll do it. You dont want to put a bunch of money into an old beater, just need it to start in -25° temps from the cab without a key? He'll rig a reliable remote either dispenser and wire a toggle & push-button ignition.

The 3rd is also a magician with a welder of any kind. And thats what he does now.
