I change OEM shocks at 500k miles. No Monroe or Gabriel . Freightliner or Sachs brand only.

If you don’t have any steer axle wear, it’s not alignment, shocks have no affect on tire wear. Is it similar on the other axle positions, the same inside tire? Do you run a cats eye or crossfire? In dual tires, the air pressure is never the same between them and the lower pressure tire will be scraping down the road all day long. It doesn’t take much difference either. It’s more noticeable in a tire like that than a typical big lug tire. If it’s uniform wear, I’d get one of those products and it would probably go away. If it’s not uniform wear and it’s flat spots being worn in different areas, I’d get Centramatics on there too. I prefer the Cats Eye product over Crossfire, the Crossfire loses its color indicator over time and it’s just black all the time, the Cats Eye doesn’t seem to wear out.

The reason I didn’t go with OEM was mostly because they are only oil shocks. The next generation shocks are oil and gas shocks. Oil shocks are still good, but I want the best of the best. I felt the difference when I got some Monroe.

About the Gabriel shocks, I was told by a parts guy at the Freightliner in Tolleson, AZ, that many drivers have been returning them. I’ve also heard some bad news on the Monroe, but not from the parts guy. The problem with oil and gas shocks is that they probably won’t last as long as the oil shocks. I hear the gas eventually leaks out.

You can't beat the accuracy of a pencil gauge as long as they haven't been dropped or bent. I would never trust a digital.

As for the wear, I had a set of Yokohamas on my truck that were doing kind of the same thing. Two of them got so bad, I had to replace them.

Upon further inspection, the bad ones were made in Thailand and the better ones were made in the US... same brand, model, all purchased at the same time. Check the country of origin on all those Michelins.

yes. gas will leak out in a year. After 150k miles Monroe will be worn out. I had them on my trucks.

Along with the laundry list of other potential causes. Shocks alone will not cause that kind of wear. If you only drove in the State of Indiana, then maybe.

That’s not how it reads. It doesn’t mean the whole list is occurring. One or more causes may be occurring, but very unlikely that all of them are occurring. My whole point was to show that shocks do have an effect on tires, which you said it didn’t.

Worn shocks cause excessive wheel hop, which does for sure wear tires.

The wear is on mainly the 3rd axle inner tires and very very little on the 2nd axle inner tires
