Why are some day cab tractors so long?

The day cabs I was driving were short wheel base mostly becuase of the tight areas we had to back into. The ride was horrible beating you half to death on even the smallest of bump's and I've noticed the short WB trucks have poor handling. It took me a while to get used to driving something that short.
