Why are there so many Eastern European immigrants that drive trucks?

In the late '80's I did a project, helping a friend of mine convert his factory payroll from hourly to piece rate. This was in Seattle, when sewing manufacturing was still a thing in the area, waning but still hiring thousands of people in the greater Seattle metropolitan area.

He had 250 employees. Nine languages were spoken. The factory manager was indispensable, as he spoke eight of the nine languages.

Of the 250 employees we had dozens with college degrees, including Phd's. In their home countries they were engineers, professors, lawyers, and doctors. But in America, with often limited English and without US recognized degrees or certification, they got the best job available: sitting at an industrial sewing machine for hours every day.

So you have a college degree, and let's say your life and the life of your family is in danger, so you apply for sanctuary in another country. Your college degree isn't recognized there. What are YOU going to do to support your family? Learn a new language from scratch and go to college again? Or are you going to find the highest paying job available given your circumstances?

Thanks for reminding me. We had a commercial cargo pilot in the fabric cutting department.
