Like the title says, why are used trucks so much money now. I'm seeing peterbilts going for $40,000-$50,000 that are 12-16!years old with 1.6 million miles on them. The ones that are in not to good of shape with no recent rebuilds are going for $22,000-$26000. Even freight liners and volvox I noticed have gone up in price. I'm looking for 2003 or earlier. I know these are higher in demand because of no emissions. But i don't know who in their right mind would pay $40,000 for a 2000 Pete.
Why are used trucks so over priced now??

You answered you own question, there is a lot of demand for pre emission trucks, so prices are staying high on anything before 2006. Just like you drivers want a reliable truck without all the emissions BS of the newer trucks. The other factor is that truckers are holding onto their pre emission trucks and having them rebuilt instead of moving up to newer trucks. local dealer had a 2002 Pete 379, 1.3M miles, 18sp, (rebuilt CAT, 200K on it) sell for $59K, he had it 3 days and the phone didn't stop ringing. It was clean but no show truck.

You answered your own question. A lot of 2007 and older trucks are auctioned and sold off to places like South America or Russia and eastern Europe. There was about a 2 year period, give or take from 07 to 09 when used truck prices were dirt cheap. Made used equipment attractive to anyone wanting to get in a truck and also people looking to make money exporting. Don't think prices will ever be that cheap again.

A year ago I bought my 1997 Pete short hood for 13,000 all rebuilt with paper work. It wasn't the prettiest truck but I cleaned her up. Now I saved money for a 2nd truck and want to stay with a Pete because mine has treated me well but with the prices of them it's like forget it. Ill probably try to get an old freightliner or volvo with a Detroit.

Have you priced a new one? They make that overpriced old one look like a bargain....

Had 320 tractors listed on TRUCK PAPER in the 2000 to 2003 model years for $15,000.00 to $25,000.00 here is the PETE portion

Trucks without EGR are 2002 and older. Some 2003 don't have EGR and some do. 2004 and newer all have EGR and they get worse from there to the present.
