Why are Volvos so much better than all other Class 8 trucks?

Floating is shifting a manual without a clutch. You modulate the engine revs to the exact point necessary to shift.

It's far safer to clutch in and out of gears, which is why it's there in the first place.

Floating is where you don't push the clutch in when you shift by matching rpm to road speed. Nearly impossible on any car with a hydraulic assist clutch which is pretty much every car made side the 80s. Until recently trucks all had manual clutches, the clutch spring is connected to the pedal via linkages, not a hydraulic cylinder.

I know a dozen shops that will do a clutch job for about 1500. A clutch job is new clutch, pilot bearing, clutch brake, throwout bearing, and resurface flywheel which is almost always possible.

Obviously if you want new rear engine mounts and them to open up tote transmutation its going to cost more, but neither of those is considered part of a clutch job.

Less chance of grinding a gear if you mess up. And while you're learning, you WILL mess up.

Grinding the gears a little bit is going to happen while learning, even if you use the clutch, so you curse at yourself and learn not to do that.

It has nothing to do with the clutch and everything to do with the fact that car transmissions have synchro mesh, but heavy duty don't.

So the synchronizers that are supposed to make it easier to shift actually make it harder. Funny.

I haven't had a modern car that was a standard transmission. All my manual shift cars were older vehicles with manual clutches that would float shift just fine.
