So everyone is selling for almost $4.00/gallon and there is this place where they are selling for $3.40/gallon. Why? Is it low quality? Should I stay away? Will it hurt my car?
Why cheap Gas/Diesel is cheap?

The cheaper gas is probably laced with fentanyl, it could easily kill your car. I would buy the more expensive gas if I were you.

The lower priced fuel may be from a number of reasons. I would buy fuel there in a heartbeat if fuel is $4. Here in Maine its only $3.11 per gallon. One resaon of the cost is that the owner could be starting a price war. Another reason is the cheap price could be the actual price everyone else should be listing their fuel. People dont like change and will stick with some where that will charge them more as they think that place will reward their loyalty. Pigs eye.
Lets look at it from a different perspective. If you want more customers and you feel sales arent what they could be. If you have lower cost of fuel you will attract more customers. Tho if the supplier is selling you the fuel at $3.30 per gallon your only making ten cents per gallon. Where competition is going to make seventy cents per gallon. That seventy cents is probably paying the price of having workers that want above average wages.
If anything, examine the fuel pump. There should be a sticker on the fuel pump from the state where you live. That sticker means that the state has inspected the pumps to make sure you are getting the amount of gasoline that you pumped. As well as that the state tested the fuel to make sure it met the vollatility required by law to fuel todays cars. If that sticker isnt on the pump? Dont bother buying fuel there.Solo Soul Thanks this. -
Gas, can be questionable, diesel, much less so, but make sure it isnt off-road diesel

we had to sell the gasoline for retail, due to the laws up here about selling cheap, and losing money, and going out of business. it is also applied to the pricing of milk. any store that sold milke below retail, got fined.
to undercut the price a station paid the distributor, is stupid, as the owner loses money, over the cost he paid the distributor.
one of many reasons are the additives in the gasoline at the various stations. there is always a "base" product, that they all start from, then the "additives" and the different packages the station or franchise MUST pay for. like octane boosters, cleaners, etc.
the lower prices seen are selling the 'base" product with little to NO additive, or additive packages.
this has some value to the station owner, as it brings in more customers, but may harm "some engines", that REQUIRE certain octane levels or "cetane" levels in diesel.
come engine performance, the lower priced fuels, may let the engine lug, sputter, and be difficult to run efficiently.
also, come winter, the lower priced fuels fall short of properly running engines, and fuel efficiency,
in the end, does lower priced fuels do long term harm to the engine, the sensors, catalytic converters?
not really, but given the parts mentioned, one could have computer problems as the computer is constantly making adjustments to over come the short comings of the cheaper fuels.
one more note, i also hauled fuel from the different fuel distributors, and i had to operate the control box, to mix the additives for the diesel, for either winter, or summer, or a particular customer, all through the year.Last edited: Sep 13, 2021

Quit complaining, gas price spike is right around the corner, with all this mishigosh overseas and in the Gulf, I'm surprised it hasn't spiked yet. Diesel in my area is .20 cheaper than gas, even though, according to my local station, diesel outsells gas 4 to 1. It's long been clear, stations don't make squat on fuel, and a recent $2.60 Hershey bar purchase ( .88 @ Walmart) may bolster that fact.

There's nothing "wrong" with it, it just doesn't have the road tax added to the price. If you get caught running off-road diesel the fine is huge.Snailexpress, Cowboyrich, Mototom and 3 others Thank this. -

I put off road diesel in my box truck and pick up truck all the time
