Through our experience we've been able to help other young couples experiencing the same thing. It generally starts with us telling our story then they react with surprise saying it sounds like us, or something similar. It's a crazy thing.
Why did you choose to truck?

I was promised 72 virgins and a chariot to ride through Valhalla but all I ended up with was a crusty old lot lizard and a jalopy of a Freightliner with mismatched fenders.

My company was offering it's 2nd largest severance package and they had already moved me around the country several times over my tenure with them. I was making a LOT more money than I should have and knew that if I left the company I would take at least a 50% pay cut trying to get a similar job/title with another company while being in an area that was not cheap to live and no way my pride would have allowed me to make less money and move out of my nice place and into...erm, a much lesser nice place. What I needed to do was find a line of work that may pay me less, but would possibly break me even if I didn't have the living expenses...so I got my CDL and all of my endorsements and moved into my company-issued truck. That was just shy of 2 years ago. Some regrets, but I'm confident that I made the right choice.

If you move all your stuff to a storage facility then you can live rent free out of your company truck for an entire year of OTR driving to save cash. You won't need a car or the insurance payments. In fact if you go this route then your only bills should be to your phone provider, your storage rental unit & paying back driving school.
Even on a bad day at least trucking isn't the 9-5 grind or the same old routine again. And on an average day it means getting paid to safely haul cargo while listening to jams of your choice in the cab solo & just being left the heck alone for the most part if you just get your load there on-time, safe.
Once you get a few years of accident free CDL driving under your belt then you can take your pick of jobs on offer - don't worry too much about that either, just get through the starter company grind first.
Even some of the "starter" companies have some decent gigs going once you know what's going on around. There are always options if you have a clean, valid CDL and that's the number 1 reason to get into trucking over most other careers.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 14, 2020
