After getting the golden handshake at work after 14 yrs employed
I felt i needed a job that i can pretty much do anywhere i lived in the
country, and something that was somewhat in demand

Never again having to worry about part dimensions, material specs
and the boss/lead man breathing down my neck wanting to know why i had 30 minutes down time on the press i ran the night before

Give me the open road any day

    firstcav and notarps4me Thank this.

This is something that I wanted to do ever since I was a little kid. Look around at all the jobs that have went away. I don't like being closed up in in some building and I like the adventures of never knowing where I am going. Plus; this is the best job that I know of to make a decent living. It has it's up and downs, but so does everything else.

    ssbowles and driver4015 Thank this.

    good question to ask.
I am still rather young, 22 years young. My family always went on vacation, and we always went by car, actually a conversion van. and spending days on the rd heading to our next vacation spot i always get excited when we passed a truck, or when they passed us, i would loose all focus on what was being talked about or what movie we had on just to admire these huge amazing trucks. Whenever i ran to the store with my parents i would always make them pull over so i could watch the truck back into the docs. they have always impressed me.
I new from the time i was 6 that trucking was for me. always had toy trucks, hotwheels trucks, tonka trucks. I had this Car Mat on the floor, and i would always have my cars backed up in " traffic jams " while my tractor trailer was backing into a dock, i even had a few trucks roll over in my pretend world of trucking, its horriable i no, that an 8 year old new that trucks roll over on curves, and why,
As i got older and took intrest in other job fields i just knew that i was not cut out to sit in any stupid office all day long, even tho some people TRY and compare sitting in a truck and sitting in an office, you simply can not compare the too.
well, over the years, and getting older i tried and tried to look for a nother job that may intrest me, and with my saticfaction i was unable to find any other intrest,
i thought long and hard, and did mega amounts of research on the trucking industry, and i new for a fact that this has got to be one of the most secured jobs in this nation. i figured that if people were breathing then it was surly job security, even tho our enconmy is on a rollercoaster slide and climb, im here for the long haul and im going to stand by my company throug the tuff times were facing, and plus, after truck driving im screwed if i need to look for a nother job, cause i dont want a nother job.
people always say have a second trade, well, i only have one, and thats trucking and it always going to be trucking.

Cause i've got a love for a truck that is just kinda hard to describe...but to me when you can do what you love then nothing else matters.

I was working at a career at the top of my field as Director of Technology for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, living in Prague, Czech Republic when Congress decided that my position was no longer warranted. I spent almost 2 years looking for work in my career field (to no avail) and working odd jobs. After a massive layoff at a previous employer, I decided to go to trucking school and become a trucker.

We had two small children who insisted they eat 3 meals a day (they still do). Driving truck feeds them and puts shoes on their feet. I am now looking forward to the day I can retire and be home with them more often.

Well, let's see....my Dad drove for 37 years, my brother-in-law just hung it up after 35 years, all of my 8 brothers did/still do drive, so I was cursed with the "diesel in my veins" right out of the chute.
I tried the military, a year of school, working "normal" jobs, but "it" just wasn't there. What's "it"? Don't ask me, I'm just a truck driver...:biggrin_25510:
But then I broke down and went and got my CDL, and here I am... Lovin' every minute of it. Well, most of it anyway.
Like tarps said, it has it's ups and downs, but what job doesn't? Ever heard the expresision "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work"? Same can be said for trucking...:yes2557:

It was my granddads fault, he was the happiest person I have ever met and I figured driving had something to do with it.

Plus, I wanted to avoid wearing a suite like my dad... Who is the most miserable person I know.
