In seriousness I started in the late 80s because in eastern North Dakota at the time there wernt many jobs .
I was a auto mechanic at the time but it didn't pay well .
Had a friend that was leased to dart and he took me with him and tought me how to drive .
When I was competent enough I lied my way into a a small fleet now defunct fleet in Minneapolis and by the grace of God 32 accident free years later I'm still here .

The local strip club had no openings....

Seriously, folks, I got introduced to trucking by the ex, rode seat cover, he was to teach me. Then his lazy butt decided that his miles made enough $ (500 miles being a huge strenous day).
I drove on a permit from OK to outside Indy and I was hooked.
Long story short, domestic abuse, ran home, picked a training company, and started solo trailer trucking.
Best day of my life: pulling up to his house in a tractor from a company that fired him and handing him divorce papers.
Trucking been beddy beddy good to me!

I like it because it's a good fit, due to the fact that I work well independently. I came from the building trades, slinging drywall for one company and pulling pipe wrenches for another, and it's nice not having someone breathing down my neck scrutinizing my every move.

I got into trucking because I like driving and did not like working in a factory. I enjoyed driving and listening to radio talk shows. Art Bell or Bruce Williams were alway good back then. I enjoyed the freedom of being alone. Alone from all the messed up people.

As long as you abide by the laws and not hit anything you always have a job. I worked in an office for 10 years and got tired of getting laid off.

I see the economy was a decision maker for a lot of people. It was an influence on me as well growing up in Central Arkansas, but it wasn't the deciding factor. I've just always loved big trucks. My dad drove a truck all of my life so that's definitely what started the love affair. Its also a case of, the bigger the boy, the bigger the toy. My tonka trucks grew up with me. Some of the most fun times I've had were during my stint driving a heavy wrecker. You ain't had fun till you flip a rolled 18 wheeler back over. Nowadays, I'm in it for the money and the scenery

Funny thing with me, A City Boy out of High School- What did I want to do? I was working in the Concrete Specialties Business, I started delivering concrete pipe and Spacer Rings to Jobsites locally In Chicago on a Regular Drivers License- 18' straight truck flatbed- 19 years old.

Sat down and thought, Hmmm....I think i'll go to Lincoln Tech and be a mechanic- Then my Brother (Who is younger than me) Said.... "Truckers Make Millions"... I Believed it, Only thing is I only Made 1 million so far

Oh by the way......I'm the only Moron in my family in the trucking business.....
