I was burned out from years of dispatching ambulances. Trucking combined my passions for driving long distances, sitting in one place, yelling at stupid people who can't actually hear me, and making some kind of income.

I suppose it started by riding with my dad a few times in the sixties. He ran concrete roofing slabs and sewer pipe. It was only day trips, but it was fun for me. Also he did a bit of gravel haul, I got to ride on a Cat pushing fill into a swamp.
Later, when I was sixteen, I got to go on a three day run into northern Ontario with a neighbour. He drove an International cab over hauling wood chips and lumber.
After the military. I walked into Rosenau Transport in Edmonton to visit my brother, when I got in the door, old Gus said " oh, you must be the new guy" and thru me a set of keys to a three ton body job, shoved the paperwork in my hand and off I went. My brother saw my car outside later in the day and asked Gus if he saw me. When my brother said I was just visiting, Gus asked "does he have a license?" . I wound up working there for a year.
