How the heck did did that work? Did it slow you down to stall speed and then roll on the power for you?

It didn't slow you down all that much to the point where you would need to drop a gear. Let's say you were going 60 mph and hit a curve posted for 50. The system might slow you down to about 50.

and so too a common failure, listening to a manual being finely ground dozens of times per day, or "slammed" into gear because the clutch brake is gone and the only method of getting it into gear is jam one foot on the brake, and force it into gear, grinding as it goes, until it slams home and "bang, clunk, thud or thud". If I had a penny for every time I see or hear one of those, I could retire. There is good and bad to every trans out there, just because you think your god's gift to manuals, doesn't make it so for others. Cleaning my windows at the T/A this morning, watched an old timer, guy looked to be in his late 50's, grind his way from neutral to 1st, with a slam that rocked the whole truck and left it shaking for a moment before he pulled away. That's skill, and abuse.

And how is technology that has been around for more than a decade and constantly being refined "junk", oh, that's right because it's technology that you have refused to understand, grasp, or figure out. But, then again, the same could be said for switching from a quill and ink, to a pencil, to a ball point pen, to a typewriter to a computer. Let's look at this comparison, go drive one of the first generation AWD Audi's and then drive a 2015 model. Audi is currently on it's 20th generation AWD system, a system they have been developing for 40 yrs, and they still aren't happy with it, even though it's the most technologically advanced system on the road. The same can be said for these transmissions. In the 8 yrs I drove my '09 autoshift Mack, there were 8 software updates. Why do you suppose that was? Because it was defective? or because they found ways to improve it. Following your logic, get rid of your computer, smart phone, etc., because every time an update comes along, it disproves your logic.

I test drove a manual Pete in 2008 that had it, it would scrub off a enough speed that sometimes you would have to downshift, sometimes not, it depended on the road condition.

My logic has not been disproved on this topic my friend. Quite the contrary.

To paraphrase the OP's question, "Why do some people dislike auto's" and my original answer was "For me, it's lack of reliability." That is a fact and cannot be questioned.

Imagine how durable a manual trans is when it`s able to take the abuse given it by some of those clowns that you mention.

One day they will get the auto right (maybe it`s even right today) but in order to own it I would have to buy an emission truck...and what are they....yep, JUNK. So I should buy a $150,000 truck with all of the emissions problems just so I can run away from shifting? Tell me what you would do if you were responsible for allocating capital.

I bought a truck last spring...an '86 Pete with a mechanical Cat. The newest truck in my forseeable future is a pre EGR 2003. What kind of auto do you think that would get me?

    Oh happy day.

I thought someone above summed up nicely. Auto's are a complicated and expensive solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Audis and Volvos. I suppose it wouldn't surprise you to know that I own a '85 suburban 6.2 and a '95 Suburban 6.5. (Hint: 6.2 and 6.5 aren't software versions)

You don't want an auto. Fine don't buy one. But don't sit at the lunch counter at the TA and act like autos are somehow going to be the death of the industry. If they are "complicated and expensive", then by golly they're DEFINITELY not going to show up in all the mega fleets any time soon.

If using something that makes my job a lot easier over all makes me less of a trucker than you, then I'll just have to live with that.
