why do companies spec trucks so stupidly?

This! But man I wish I had a spare truck that could just sit and be ready....only downside, for me, to this O/O.

I know, right? I mean, back when I started, my company was really stupid. They didn't even spec the trucks with a menu at all! I had to buy a watch just to tell what time it was. Dispatch said it was because the truck was a 1979... pfft... yeah right. Liars!

Then when I was smoking, the power windows wouldn't roll down because... get this... NO power windows! They expected me to actually roll them down by hand--with a crank--it was brutal! And if that wasn't bad enough, there was no freakin APU either!

The final straw was the transmission though. No matter what I did, it would not go into automatic mode. I tried everything too. I called into dispatch and let them have it... how the heck was I supposed to drink a 44 ounce Slurpee with one foot up on the dash in Chicago traffic?

My new company is much better though. They even provide us with Mutant Ninja Turtle pajamas and flip flops... you know, so we look real professional at the customer's place of business.

I'm still puzzled on how someone can pass the road test but not set a clock.

I can't set the clock in the Volvo I'm driving, but it's because the button is broken on the windshield washer lever.

Some of those things dang near require a degree in electrical engineering....lol, it takes me nearly half an hour to adjust my watch every time change.

And to the op, they do it just to piss you off and make you quit, to inflate turnover rates and push the driver shortage myth.

No they don't, anyone can figure it out, I'm talking about the clock, not reprogramming the ecm.

I don't know if I want to be amused by some of the complaints listed here. Dark cabin mode? Really? Remove light bulbs until the #### thing is dark. Or pull fuse.

In my time of early computer trucks you pulled your laptop with the correct port and software and made the changes yourself. Just remember to keep the settings that the company was so you can restore it prior to arrival at the company yard.

I understand you cannot do this now because you dont own the truck, you are not a mechanic with authroity to access this stuff and so on.

Frankly I don't have any desire to live in a gilded cage with a living space dictated by a office drone 2000 miles away. I'll take a shot at getting a less restricted truck with someone else. Im kind of glad I got out when the getting was good. But I really miss the old days of iron where you did what you needed to yourself if you wanted certain things inside and around your tractor cab.

The use of computer sensors on the truck to prevent you from making reasonable changes to adjust to whatever it is you are looking for is for the birds if you ask me. What's next? Chips inside your body to tell the authorities if you are consuming too much air? /rhetorical...
