Why do drivers hang broken tarp straps from their steps?

I've been driving for 34 years, mostly flatbed and drop deck and have only noticed the hanging cords in the last few years. I've never asked another driver why and in my opinion, it only makes the truck look dirty. To each their own, I guess.

Yesterday, I was looking straight ahead out of my Ram ( I lease to a Landstar and don't drive my life away anymore). I just wondered what the deal was? Originally, I just figured they had to account for broken straps, but over the years I've noticed they generally look to be newer and done on purpose. Now, I've started noticing them with all different wagons as well. I didn't know if it was a good buddy thing, a supertrucker thing or whatever and figured the "vast" knowledge here would educate me.

For all those that never noticed it before, now you will and you'll swear "that da** fortycalglock"

Actually, I've wondered the same thing. And I've come to a conclusion.

Maybe it's just a way for company drivers to customize their trucks, since they can't put lights or chrome on it they just hang straps off of it...

makes em look cool like those big riggers that leave their hookup lights on when driving down the big road....kinda like them youngsters that have their undershorts pulled up higher than their jeans..and wear their hats sideways....
