Is driving a day cab really tiring? Don't they go home every night.

Day cabs are rented out to the homeless. Sleeper cabs are rented out by the wish we were home.

I know that around the ports in my area (Norfolk, VA area) a lot of times, they will spend most of the day pulling boxes out of the port; Stashing them somewhere, then later on at night, they take the trailers to the customers. So they don't get a lot of sleep except on the weekends.

Just another reason why, like the military, Truck driving is a lifestyle... not a job.

Bingo patty, I did a LOT of so called "local" work with day cabs, and before the latest regs, it wasn't unusual to start at midnite, and wouldn't get done until 3 pm. Go home, try and sleep (dogs barking, kids screaming) and be back at midnite and do it again. Someone on another thread was considering buying a day cab, and I told them, get a small sleeper, sleeping over the wheel is the PITS!!

I did the otr thing for 9 yrs.Went local because my mom got sick. You work get home sleep, get up and back at the trk ready to roll right when your 10 hrs is up.Sometimes you're too tired to even eat. What im finding for local work is a lot more work then otr guys and most don't pay enough. The ads I see in the paper they leave a lot of things out.I was going to apply to this tanker job.Talk to the owner yesterday. Most the places you load and unload yourself and don't get extra pay for it.No time off including holidays you work and it pays 38 cpm.So right now im applying for shuttle work. Its hard finding a company with a set schedule. This one company I could have had the job if it weren't for 2 things,on call and it took 2 weeks to get the background check back, which says a lot about the company.[QUOTE="semi" retired;4072184]Bingo patty, I did a LOT of so called "local" work with day cabs, and before the latest regs, it wasn't unusual to start at midnite, and wouldn't get done until 3 pm. My day cab job was with ACT here in Liberty. I put in 14 hour days and one 16 hour every week. I got weekends off.

I am an old man. The cranking up and down of landing gear is the worst part of trucking. Second worst is pulling that stupid uncoupling lever. Third moving the tandems back and forth. Forth is opening the swing doors. Fifth is backing.

So guess what a local driver does all day. Even if he never has to touch freight.

    That's how I live..Run my nuts off,drive an hr.to,and from work.Im lucky to get
6hrs a night sleep.Get up at 1,2,or 3 am do it all over again with live unloads.
All that, so I can post here everynight, and pet my doggies :biggrin_2554:
My version of local is pretty rough, and that's not even getting into traffic, and the
    physical hand unloading.

tow614, Mudguppy, pattyj and 1 other person Thank this.
