What you make starting out is of course a function of how much experience you have.

Less experience = less pay (generally speaking).

This also depends on what sector of trucking you join.

Where you live, & what state you live in -- can indeed make a real difference with what you make, vs what you keep.

Lenny summed it up best. Its a time vs money equation. If you max your 70 hours a week and work say....48 weeks a year and only count the time you actully work. Your looking at 3360 hours a year. 60k a year and your looking at around $17 an hour. If you count ALL the time your away though and work that same 48 weeks a year....your looking at 8000 hours a year or around 7.5 bucks an hour.

Trucking is a gig thats more lifestyle then job. Its a problem that really depends exactly how you look at it.

The AVERAGE truck driver in the USA earns about $45k GROSS annually... Think about that for a few mins. If you want to have a life and family outside of the truck... DONT GET IN THE TRUCK!!! Trucking can be good money, but its horrible for anything else... And its hard to get away from once your in it... Trust me. I had to take a $10k annual pay cut to get out of the truck so I could have a family life. Do yourself a favor go into a skilled trade where you can make good money working 40 to 50 hours a week and still have a life... Your future family will thank you.

think again. then , think twice before you make your decision.

trucking is a great career for someone who likes to travel, who likes to get to know places and to be alone. Alfa personality. someone who doesn't like to be told what to do. having said that , you either become 100% independent O/O , or you drive for a good company that pays you very well plus all your benefits. Don't ever do lease purchase, lease operator, nor work under someone else's authority. Please, don't ever compare your pay check from you previous job with you trucking job!!!!

    $14.70/hr for the first example.

70 hours equivalent overtime pay is 85 hours.

Once you get a little older there are many things that are way more important than money...

Great pay is one amount to one person, same amount is lousy pay to another. Depends on your needs, and wants. I took a less paying job, but I'm working half as hard as I used to. With fewer headaches.
