Why do shippers require tandems all the way back?

Some shippers require them to be all the way back. My question is why and is it bad for my trailer to get loaded/unloaded? Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Some docks sit too high so tandems to the back give the trailer a boost. Also for certain loads, it's a little smoother for the forklift to go in the trailer. I got some coffee in Chattanooga once, and they asked me to slide them back. I forgot to and hit the dock. The forklift driver went in and the trailer dipped too low and the pallet tipped over. I'll take some heat for that, but I don't believe that driver all the knew what he was doing. I think he went in too fast, and the pallet wasn't shrink wrapped properly.

Load support! Less dock plate dipping because of the forklift & load weight when unloading.

I will add, I slide to the back every time for heavy loads. I actually find it easier to place the tandems after loading. It don't shake the truck as much either.

So for the sake of my trailer is this something I should do more often?

I do for all heavy loads. I feel it’s courtesy to the forklift operator to smooth it out some.

Have no clue about vans, but a 53’ flat with sliding tandems better be spread when driving equipment on it from a ramp. Seems like the same principle except there isn’t 45k rolling on at once

I newer thought I’d be sticking up for a forklift guy, but just wow. You’re lucky he wasn’t hurt.

Please man...he wouldn't have been hurt. Like I said, he tipped the pallet over. I felt how he went in the trailer, and that was with authority.
