BTW, 1500 hp is not that special for a racing engine.
Plenty of 5.9 B-series Cummins engines out there that do better than that.
Or International DT-series over 3000 bhp.spyder7723 and spsauerland Thank this. -
camshaft and cam followers on early MX engines
Turbo failures, which in some cases resulted in engine runaway, rods breaking and smashing a hole in the block
Pistons cracking on some of the very late euro-V engines (piston cracks, combustion gasses passing through the crack burn hole in piston)
Most of it fixed under warranty without any discussion.
Some of the problems well documented, some DAF/Paccar don't want to talk about (but they do pay for repairs)spsauerland and Cat sdp Thank this. -
Turbo's could be seen before they broke.
Pitting in the vanes was the first sign.
My dealer would check the turbo when doing a oilchange.
Only ones who blew their engine were those not wanting to change their turbo .
I should point out the MX's KVB and me are referring too were fixed vane turbo's.
Camfollowers were a issue as the trucks got older.
Cheap fix.
I know off only 1 that had the camfollower break at a young age and he got warranty.
On mine i had a 1$ spring off the pumpunit break.
That's all.
Turbo's are replace early anyway as i have low miles but high engines hours.
In 3 y i have a little less then 6000 hours but only 160 000 miles.Last edited: Jun 4, 2018
KVB Thanks this. -
Silly answers like "yakkh", doesn't help.

If you buy an aftermarket replacement turbo (for Euro-V MX), you still have to be very specific about what you want.
If not you can still get the aluminum impeller turbo instead of titanium.
As far as camshafts, friend of mine had 3 MX EURO-V, one had camshaft go and damaged block, and got new engine.
2nd had damage to cam, cam and followers were replaced, 3rd had cam replaced preventive.
DAF paid all the expenses and dealer was willing to provide a loaner truck during the time the others were down.
His trucks had PTO-driven equipment, so he could not use the loaner, but was offered free of charge.Oxbow Thanks this. -
If yes this might be possible reason for damaged camshaft -
@98989
What is the MB price off the one box (scr+dpf) ?
US $ 15000 cad 19000 some claim on TTR.
Have you known that whole box had to be replaced ? -
In 06 me and very good friend bought 2 trucks together. (Got a sweet deal)
MX's.
I sold mine in 15 ,he is still driving his.
Those 2 made us a lot off money at very low cost off ownership.
I do the valvesettings , a overhead,yearly.
Maybe that is why we never had problems?
I am a BIG believer off preventitive maintenance.
And a lot off issues with modern engines can be traced back to poor maintenance or driver abuse.
Most.....not all. -
Negative.....
piss poor engineering is the biggest problem with modern engines. They only care about stock price....nothing else.
