Yes, rail transport is subsidized. However, building a road infrastructure for all the cars and trucks that are not on the road because of rail transport, would be a magnitude more expensive, and often impossible.

The Dutch rail roads are going to spend billions on building new stations, and lengthening the platforms on existing stations to accommodate for longer trains. On the most busy routes, the trains will not use a timetable any more, they will drive metro style, so a train every 10 minutes.

The EU has 28 member states, so that question is a bit difficult to answer.

No, after 3 years of internal squabbling the conservative party and its government haven't been able to reach agreement about what Brexit should look like. The government now tries to get an agreement with the labour party, the opposition. That will not work either. Meanwhile it has become clear that the result of a second Brexit referendum would be that the people of the UK want to remain in the EU.

In the local elections a few days ago, the conservatives lost many seats, and labour lost seats as well. The liberal democrats (remain, pro EU) gained many seats.

In a few weeks we will have European elections, it looks very bad for the conservatives as well.

Wouldn't surprise me if Brexit will never become reality, and the UK stays in the EU.

Why? Those brexiteers were blatant liars. They told the people of the UK that effectively nothing would change, that the UK held all the cards in the negotiations with the EU. In reality, the UK held no card what so ever. That's the problem with this kind of populist politicians, they can tell the people all kind of beautiful sounding BS, and the people will believe them. A very familiar theme all over the world.

The only reason it's going to cause problems is because the petulant Brussels and British bureaucrats controlling the levers of power are doing just what they do causing unnecessary problems. Which is a familiar theme throughout history. They're elite snobs who cant accept the reality of a legitimate vote. They know better than everyone else and they're going to show everyone just what sort of power they have.

Oh no. Prime minister May said "Brexit means Brexit", and the EU said "Brexit means Brexit". That means a hard Brexit, no special relations between the UK and the EU. Then the UK politicians (incl. the Brexiteers) started to think what that meant, after the referendum of course. A hard Brexit would be devastating for the UK economy. Jacob Rees-Mogg, one of the most prominent Brexiteers (and multimillionaire), estimated that it would take about 50 years for the UK economy to recover from a hard Brexit. Nice if you are a factory worker and your factory closed down because of Brexit.

So the UK asked the EU for nice deals. The EU said, yes, you can have nice deals, but there are conditions for those nice deals. You signed up for those conditions, remember? Other countries deal with the EU with those conditions in place. But the UK said, no, we want the nice deals but without those conditions. And then the EU said, no way, take it or leave it. We will not make special conditions just for the UK. You want to leave, please leave if you must.

I still can hear Boris Johnson say that the EU would give in, and offer the UK the most beautiful deals. Otherwise, Germany could not sell its cars in the UK. That was what the people of the UK was told before the referendum, a huge pile of BS.

So now the UK parliament has made a law, that what ever happens, the UK government is not allowed to let a hard Brexit happening.

In short, the UK has manoeuvred itself in a corner, and doesn't have the foggiest idea how to get out of there. The EU is just watching the self destruction of the UK.
