Why do so many Americans hate European trucks?

I knew it. Just like everything else, you take something that you have never heard of before, Google it, and then lecture the rest of us on the subject.

Reminds me of some of the kids right out of college. The good ones realize that they possess enough knowledge to begin to learn with practical experience.
The rest feel that they already know everything, and make fools of themselves.

Of course I know what a series/parallel switch switch is, the name says it all. Just as I know what a Y-Δ switch is. I just didn't know what is was used for. Other US truck manufacturers used compressed air to start the engine. @spyder7723 writes about "the massive problems, expense, downtime, and headaches they caused", don't you think that proves what a stupid idea they were, and that going for a 24V system would have been a better idea? The military and the European truck industry did not use them, so they didn't have those problems. They made the wiser choice.

Again, you need to read better, or work on comprehension.

I asked if you REMEMBER s/p switches.

How can I remember those things if they were not used here?

Is that a "no"? Shame you won't answer the simplest of questions.

I remember air starters as well. They were popular among ltl freight companies that always had numerous tractors with which to supply air should the air supply be depleted. They required an additional large air reservoir to function, and most common as I recall on Freightliners, but no, they were not specific to a particular manufacturer, but were an option on all brands.

My point behind all of this is that the method with which to merge tractors and trailers with different voltages exists, but I am not convinced that it is worth the cost or the problems that will ensue.

Why create a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.

They were used here (in Europe).....
Lots of old trucks used 12 volt main 24 volt starting system.

And many were converted to either full 12 or full 24 Volt, because of the problems.
Back then it was not too difficult to change everything to single voltage.

That must have been a long time ago. 6V cars also existed on both sides of the pond.

The problem does exist. Using electric drive for the oil pump, the coolant pump, and the air conditioning compressor may easily save 5% or more on fuel. Since new trucks over here have to cut down 30% on their CO2 emission by 2030, 5% reduction is very welcome.

    Probably wouldn’t meet emissions..........

They were phased out over there about the same time they were phased out here. The main difference is on that side of the pond they changed the rest of the truck to 24v and on this side we changed the starter to 12v, leaving the rest of the truck alone.
