Imo the reason they stopped offering the 16L wasnt because it was a bad engine, well ok it sucks but it's no worse than their other engine. They failed because they didn't understand the market. The guys that want a big engine want a big hood over it with a shiny stainless grill, big pipes, and big breathers.

Actually the VT64T880 did have a big hood with a big square grill and dual stacks behind the cab. They didnt have big unaerodynamic breathers though. They were designed and marketed to owner operators, the same as W900L, owner operators were the target customer. But they didnt sell very good. I thought they were an ugly duckling.

I was exaggerating the fuel mileage. Honestly he said it did fairly well on fuel but it was always in the shop for something. The interior was ok. I dunno how much money he wasted on the regen system alone. It was a money pit.

    Sure it does.

But look at Paccar Europe and Paccar US, the production numbers are quite similar.

Paccar Europe has the small LF trucks with Cummins engines, the CF trucks mostly for regional transport and construction trucks, and the XF trucks for regional transport and international transport. There are a few versions of each cab, and the chassis of the CF and XF series are quite the same. There are three MX-11 engines, and three MX-13 engines.

Paccar US has two brands, Kenworth and Peterbilt. Each brand has many different types of trucks, overlapping within the brand, but also overlapping between brands. You have seven MX-13 engines, and five MX-11 engines (the last time I looked). And there are many other parts to choose from, all rather overlapping.

So if you want to know why your trucks are so much more expensive than their European counterparts, try to think how much it costs to produce such a myriad number of different trucks, even if they share parts. But hey, if you want to pay 30%, 40%, 50% more for a truck than you would have to if you had a normal choice of different models, be happy with it.

You know what the first thing was what VW did after they had to pay huge fines? Scrap models to save money.

And what do you mean with "the government won’t stand up to the corporate interests", what has that to do with the price of trucks?

If you want truck that is proudly make in america like w900 you must expect that, technology used to make this truck require serious amount of man labor and this is what cost.

Imagine this: in 25years scania employer make in average 5 times more trucks per year than uses to be. Each new model was made to reduce production costs (mostly man labor) and it cost at least 30% less. This is only way.

Here serious spec 6x4 heavy haulage tractor with hub reduction metalic paint alcoa 3.5inch fofth wheel, parking ac. etc. with great equipment cost like 135000usd.
