Typical for western canada is tri-drive truck for a power unit. 500-600 hp. 18 speed, 18k lb steer axle with dual steering boxes, three 23k lb drive axles (usually 4.10 ratio, no hub reduction), 6 way lockers, heavy spec air suspension, air ride cab, 3/8" single frame rails.

They'll typically pull a tridem pole trailer for tree length logs. Or they'll put a pair of bunks on the truck and load the truck with wood and pull a quad wagon with 2 bundles of logs. Super B's are getting more common now though than they used to be. Self loading trucks are almost extinct now. There are not many guys left doing it since there is not much for private timber sales. Usually its big contractors that do the logging. Some do well over 100,000 cubic meters of wood a season.

They pretty much haul right off the side of mountains. Steep grades (if I were to guess in the 10% range or more) diff deep mud, 180 degree switchbacks. Winter brings snow and a lot of times the first truck is already coming down with the first load by the time the grader gets the roads plowed.

This guy always has good videos of logging stuff in BC. This is what they use for 100% off-highway stuff. This truck was probably built in the late 60's/early 70's.

If all you do is flat ground and legal weights a 2.70 and direct drive is fine. its actually more efficient than an od tranny with bigger gears. It can handle that stress. It's when you need to climb out of a hole after loading that you start having problems and breaking things.

There's a couple of examples of how our self loader trucks are set up. I actually know the owner of one of the self loader trucks in this video.

    Oxbow Thanks this.
