It has to do with the position of the kingpin. On a European trailer there can be 63 inch max. from the front of the trailer to the kingpin, in NA that is 36 inch. That is a difference of 27 inch.

 

The daycab I drove had a 254" wheelbase. Center of steer to center between the drives.

Apparently you are not aware that China is building windfarms and solar panel farms like mad. Their cities are so polluted by emissions of coal and cars/trucks, that they realize this is the only way.
