?????? In Africa there are also different gauge rails but they never came up with swapping bogies as far as I know.
    Dumb Africans just transshipped cargo.
Much more opportunity to steal some that way.
I'm still battling to believe they swap bogies , with all the vacuum hoses etc I would think it a big deal.

@Scania Man: No, strategic thinking. At the time that railroads were the principle way of transporting goods and people, and not to mention armoured trains and railroad guns, it made good sense to use a different gauge. The enemy could not just move on at the border. By the way, in 1919 a certain captain Dwight D. Eisenhower made an heroic expedition. He drove a column of trucks from the East of the US to the West, the first time any car or truck had made that journey. I have an atlas from 1914, and it contains a map with the main roads in the Netherlands. However, there are no roads on the map, just railroads and canals. Roads had no national importance.

The Dutch didn't need much for roads riding their Omafiets in 1914.

Oh yea, the older I get the more my mountain bike looks like an Opafiets. Notice the handlebars and springy seat. [IMG]

interesting, i wonder if it is possible to build bogies with widening function, something like australian heavy haulage trailers

and i wonder if any accident ever happened because of this changing of bogies, here people that inspect bogies on trains are among most drunk in country
