Back in the early 80s when we would take cross country trips in our car, we would always look for a truck running fast and stay behind him. Speed limit was national 55 mph back then and we knew the truckers had a cb radio so when they slowed down for a bear we would too.

IF it is me, it is because I get in line and try to follow at a safe distance unless it is a erratic driver, then I get by and putt down the road @ 5 over. I do not need to be first or in a hurry so I just get in line.

It is not being lazy, some of us are not in a hurry and know if everyone flows the same traffic will be smooth. There is really no smart reason to cut others off and zig zag in and out of traffic, just get in line.

I don’t care if a 4 wheeler follows me closely, unless they’ve got their high beams on or annoying LED’s. I get pissed when trucks do this though, and they do it plenty. Also, the bad-### supertruckers that come up behind me hammer down and wait until they’re 20 ft from the back of my trailer before moving into the left lane and blowing my doors off.

I've never worried about a car behind me, only the ones in front of me. Just last year a car paced me for about 150 kms. When I stopped she actually pulled in behind me, asked where I was going, bought my bottle of water in the store even though I told her no need to. We chatted for probably 10 minutes in the parking lot, she was young, nervous, traveling a long distance at night in the snow, so felt better following a big truck. I actually stopped twice more on my way home, just to check on her, and not knowing her cars fuel range encouraged her to top it off if down to half or less. Many people feel a sense of security following a truck, and if behind you they don't cause any problems, beside or in front of you is a problem. If your behind them and they lose control or slam on the brakes it is up to you to miss them. When they are following you, just drive like usual and relax.

I don’t mind it in a bad snow storm. A lot used to do it to avoid tickets when 55 a lot for a while to save fuel after they heard it on TV . What bugs me is a car or Truck with brights usually peeking out enough to see out front of me. I usually stay on middle line a while and they pass me. Got pulled over in Mississippi after doing it to a Trooper tailgating me. I explained my reason told them no I haven’t been drinking! They luckily understood said they get a lot of Drunk Truckers!! Once had a Canadian Truck Driver tailgate me for 100 miles. I slowed He slowed I sped up He sped up. I finally got mad and put him on shoulder at a dead stop and took off I think he got the message. He definitely deserved it.

When I drove for Crete at 62 mph.... If I moved to the left lane just to let a truck merge on the interstate...… Most of them would follow me for 40 or 50 miles, some for 100 miles and then finally would pass me like I was sitting still.
Did they think that since I moved over for them they were obligated to follow me or were they just really stupid?

My step mother whom is deceased now (massive heart attack, coroner said she was dead before she hit the floor). She used to chase trucks of sorts. It seems she was clinically blind and would follow a truck because it was big enough for her to follow. She drove at night so the police wouldnt see her weaving all over the road.

Yet otherwise when I was getting my class C license in California? Instructors there told the students that drunks also will pull up on a truck and follow them for the same reason. That the back end of a truck is easier to concentrate on to follow when attempting to drive drunk/impaired.

Tho if you want to shake them off? Turn on your hazards for two blinks.

tucker, Rideandrepair and Lepton1 Thank this.

Nothing Ps me off more than getting caught up with one of these idiots who buzzes all around you like a fly at 3am when you're the only 2 on the road. They always seem to have the obnoxious LED headlights to. Worse are those hasidic Jews in the black 1 year old Honda odysseys that look like they went through a demo derby carrying 10 people. They run up and down 87 between Montreal and NYC, blow by you on the right and then a mile down the road you pass them going 45 in the left lane. Then all of the sudden they blow by you again like they got shot out of a cannon.
