I never knew this. I looked it up on google earth. I always wondered why the off ramp to the Breezewood exit was so darned long. It was part of the original turnpike. If you load up Google Earth and zoom in on the Breezewood exit, you will see the abandoned road branch off about an eighth of a mile south of the TA truckstop. It runs northeast behind the hotel there then over US 30, where it continues on east, through two tunnels, and meets back up with the Turnpike just on the other side of the Sideling Hill rest area. Someone has posted some great photos of the road and the two tunnels. The caption on one of the photos says the road was abandoned in 1968, because the tunnels were only 2 lane, and it was too expensive to bore holes to make second tunnels to make them 4 lanes.

    Kabar Thanks this.
