They told me gear selection more important on a downgrade than brakes. Sure we run light at my outfit but I've gone down a lot of passes almost never touching the brakes. (go down slower, use the jakes, etc.)

I could totally see checking the engine at the top, or even letting it idle for a minute though, if I just spent the past 10-15 minutes pulling uphill.

BTW, I've never been to the Donner, but there's a hill in Central PA between State College and Harrisburg on 322, goes around the resevior, how does that compare in terms of grade?

Eastbound 322 is 8 % descending the 7 Sisters, but at least you have a 4 lane to drop down slow like the signs say, or not, going the other way is marked 25 going down that 2 lane or is it 20? I have run it loaded both ways, and the truck speed limit even with a Pac brake, means you don't need much braking from the pedal.

It's a good climb coming up from Lewistown past that reservior. I think the truck speed limit is 20 come to think of it.

I imagine that would be true as long as you don't have engine trouble on your way down the hill.:biggrin_25521:

I stop on top the hill just to make people wonder why I stopped on top the hill.

Just be careful opening the pudding cup at 11,000 ft that was packaged at sea-level.

I have run 322 A LOT. My first time, I started down just as it was getting dark; it was lightly snowing. A few miles down the road it was snowing a little harder. By the time I reached the mandatory break check, visibility was near zero; no place to stop or pull over; could not see it if there were. A few days later I ran a load from Harrisburg to Buffalo; back up 322 I went, though it was nice, sunny, noon time. What a beautiful place. It is a complete different place when you are pulling a load, or should I say, a load is pushing you, through there.

My wife opened something in thEisenhower tunnel. (11,012 feet) Got us both.
Our used poodle from the Denver Dumb Friend's League licked it up.
