Why do truckers use linear amplilfiers with their CB radios?

i kind of like my 8-tube elkin...........the squeal when you key down

 

I recently took my general lee out and put in a cobra 148 gtl w/ golden eagle 250 amp and wilson 2k. I have never had a better cb setup myself I really enjoy it and the pre-amp works quite well. Both the cb and the amp are over 20 years old and still going strong.

I missed this thread. To each his own. I'll live either way and have a power switch.

My parents taught me a long time ago it's rude to try and talk over someone. That's one reason the FCC tried to control the output so everyone was on even ground. Hear and be heard, when it's your turn.

The way it is now, some big radio will carry on a conversation, not knowing how many little radio's he can't hear that he's rudely walking all over them. Back to parenting 101. You might not know it, but you knew it when you beefed that radio up that was a possibility.

Then you hear the bozo's in the truck stop bragging. Like because you wasted your money, it's suppose to make you a bigger man or something.

I'm all for someone having a hobby. Hobbies keep people from getting in trouble most of the time. They give them something to do and keep them sane. When your hobby bothers someone else it turns into a nuisance.

I still have freedom with a power switch. So it's no real biggie to me. I spoke my 2 cents. Peace out!

Picked up a Texas Star 667V today. Sold one a while back and wished I had kept it so I grabbed this one up when I found it. Now I need to dig out my 6 gauge power wires........just what I need, another project!

 

If it truly was intended for local communication, they would've tried to avoid skip, by either making it FM or making it much higher in the frequency spectrum to make signals be more "line of sight."
