If a truck pulls out to pass me I always let off a bit to let them pass quickly. Anybody who doesn't is not a real trucker.
If you come over a hill and there is a truck doing EIGHT MILES PER HOUR slower than you and this creates a situation for you that may cause an accident then I don't know what to say.
Be patient, be courteous, be aware of what you can't see around that bend or over that rise, be safe.
Just because you can drive a truck effectively at 80 mph and the sign at the side of the road says it is the maximum allowed speed, does not mean it is prudent to do so.
But alas, I digress, you drive your truck and I'll drive mine. Your not wrong and I'm not right. We have differing opinions.
I prefer to have traffic fall away from me. I also am aware of when traffic begins to build behind me and try to relieve that pressure when I can when there is passing lanes.
I find that I enjoy the drive more when I am not trying to pass everything in front of me and I also find it much more stressless driving this way.

Ok a question then. How is going 10-15 mph slower than the posted speed limit safe? It's actually more dangerous because traffic is flowing at a steady speed and then everybody runs up on joe blow 60 mph and gets jammed up trying to go around his dumb ### which causes a bigger chance for an accident. Sorry but you're the one that doesn't get it! Get back to us after you've got a few hundred thousand miles under your belt and we might take you more seriously. -

First off, I don't speed. I obey traffic laws. I o/o and my truck is governed at 74mph. I have absolutely no desire to run any faster than that. I regularly travel Co. Wy. Ne. Sd. where the speed limit is 75, and I rarely run over 72mph.
57mph average x 10 = 570 miles a day
70mph average x 10 = 700 miles a day
570 miles a day at $2.25 a mile = $1282 a day
700 miles a day at $2.25 a mile = $1575 a day
That's a difference of $292 dollars a day
$292 x 270 days on the road a year = $78000+ a year difference.
270 days on the road a year is allowing you 8+ days a month home per year. Your mileage may vary...
Of course you'll have burned more fuel, but you're still money ahead. Tires and equipment will also wear out more quickly running faster speeds.
When you're going down the road, and you need to average 500 miles a day (that's very conservative for me) being able to run 70mph vs 57 gets your day done a whole lot quicker. I will be fueled, showered, and have already eaten dinner running 70-72 mph before the driver averaging 57 mph even gets to the truck stop. I will be there, and get a really good parking spot before 5pm running 70+ while the driver running 57 may or may not even get a parking spot, and he may be forced to eat out of the vending machine at a rest area instead of a truck stop. I can also pull off the road, and take me an hour nap mid day if I am feeling lazy, and still beat that other driver to the truck stop.
Plenty of reasons why being able to run the actual speed limit is a good thing.
I am guessing the comment stated previously about "somebody with an agenda" has nothing to do with you TruckerDragon. More than likely it was directed at companies like SWIFT. Years ago their trucks ran 65 to 70 MPH, as most trucking companies did. Price of fuel went way up, and the big companies all started cutting their trucks MPH way back. They put out plenty of propaganda, much of it totally askewed the miles per day a company driver would lose in a 57 mph truck vs a 70 mph truck. They sure didn't want drivers to realize they'd have to work that much harder for less. When they changed requirements HOS of the Off Duty/Sleeper rule to 10 hours it really helped with drivers getting a little more rest. It used to only be 8 hours, and when it takes two hours to fuel, shower and eat dinner you were only left with about 6 hours to really get any sleep, and that's if you went straight to bed...

I understand, and the tempers seem to have chilled.
My question, was more of why do people speed. But people are hung up on the speeds I mentioned.
Lets say 75, why do some truckers do 80 in a 75? or 90? Why do they speed/go faster than limit/break the law and risk everything just to go faster?
While swift is the company that made it possible for me to achive my goals of going to school, and for this I owe them some loyalty and giving them a fair chance, I dont care if the truck is governed or not, my question was more in relation to why people SPEED, go in excess of the 'speed limit' .
i have my own private plans I share with a few like Injun and a couple others, but thats neither here nor there. I have years before my boyfriend is back from the navy, so I am goign to make the most of what my life gives me in this new situation -
Yesterday I chewed out a bullhauler on the CB who was tailgating a 4 wheeler. This fork stick wasn't 5' off the bumper of the 4 wheeler who was already doing 69 in a 65, im quite sure he was gunning for 80. As forest gump once said, stOOpid is as stOOpid does. I guess thats a good of answer as any.
