Why do you want to be a truck driver?

Why? Because at 50 and having worked in and out of food service and retail grocery since I was 15 I am burnt. I am a meat cutter with the biggest natural grocer in the country and running a crew of babies is getting very old indeed.

I have sold cars and although I was good at it, it was soul sucking. You wait like a spider watching to see who will come into the web and that you can pounce on.

Had a cafe and did well with it. I was a contracted vendor and the place was closing so I went in on another place with a partner who I knew well, but not well enough. Thank god I had a great lawyer.

I want to be responsible for myself and not run a crew.

I am not a Koolaid drinker.

    Love driving.

Have looked into many things but this is the only thing that truly appeals to me. sick but true.... lol

Hey thank you for such a great reply, really appreciate the time you took! Not sure I was going for a perceptive thread though, just figured I'ld start a thread where everyone could answer; talk about themselves & wouldn't get into arguments.

. I've always been the curious type, used to read encyclopedias as a kid, ok I looked at a lot of pictures anyway! But I grew up with a brother who was a mechanic; so I never got interested in trucking because I didn't like how dirty he always looked. lol. Geesh women! I know!

Went to a few of his drag races, didn't like that, too loud for my ears. Became a health club manager for years but like you, the pay wasn't getting me ahead, tired of buying second hand stuff.

For many years I wanted to get paid to travel, looked into airlines & cruise ships but seeing I don't have much talent in picking up foreign languages, gave those ideas up. Took on 3 part time jobs, none of course gave me health insurance. What to do? Kept seeing the ads for truck driving but at first dismissed them due to earlier memories of my dirty brother.
Took a job as a stocker just to get by but all the lifting eventually caught up to me & was told I had repetitive stress syndrome as I'ld wake up in the middle of the night with my arms burning on fire.

So I quit & took a good hard look at my abilities, what was I good at? Well, I had an excellent driving record, so decided I had to give truck driving a go.

If I was younger I'ld buy my own truck like you did, just don't want any big debts at this point of my life, besides I'm not a mechanic & I don't like getting greasy, lol !.

But I do tell the younger guys buying a truck is their best option to make serious money, if they know how to work on them, the shop $$ rates are killers if you break down!

Thanks for replying, I always like going through Indiana, it's nice and flat, always do the speed limit though!

that's great to hear, It's important to love what you're doing! Thanks so much, glad you're happy.

Good way to describe selling cars. I used to date a guy who sold cars, I guess that's why he used to pounce on my all the time...lol !

Sorry to hear that it didn't work but it opened another door for you. We all live and learn.

Not sick at all. I hope you enjoy the ride!

    That was cute. thanks.

Always look at everything you do out here as a challenge and you will overcome all adversities. Do as much as you can yourself, only accept help when you truly need it.
With an" I can do attitude " you will find yourself becoming stronger mentally and feel oh so good about yourself. Don't worry I predict you will learn to enjoy it if you don't listen to all the "complaining" guys go through .

    Nope.

    Negatory.

    Uh uh...

That crossed my mind when I was a kid and decided that I hated school, but there are more important concerns at play.

I had a grandfather that drove back in the days of chain drives.

I work local, so travelling the country isn't really on the radar. But I can certainly see where it would have its appeal. :)

I like to drive, and I work well independently. I'm a creature of habit. That makes my LTL job a good fit, as the industry has been for the last 14 years. :D

A few reasons, I have a GED not a HS Diploma, I do have technical training and certifications and did IT work for years but these days that's not enough anymore. Now in IT you need multiple degrees and a ton of certs to do what I used to do on certs alone and now those newbies don't get paid half of what I did to do the same thing.

I used to tow and drive flatbeds (car and equipment) for year before I went to IT so driving wasn't new to me just had to bump up to CDL. But now I have an local, home daily hourly deal, OT after 8 and a pension. People without tons of schooling can't get stuff like that in the Tech world or realistically even in white collar positions.

Thanks for your reply. I'm curious; being home daily always sounded good but I never took it thinking I only had 10hrs off & commuting took up 1/2hr drive home & 1/2 drive back leaving me 9 hrs at home with 7hrs sleep meaning I had only 1 hr left to eat, shower, trip plan etc. thought that would be a tight schedule how do you do it?
Also curious on where you get the pension from? Guessing it's the IT job? If not I just never heard of any trucking company providing a pension. Thanks again.
