My dad used to drive a supercharged gas GMC truck in the 50's and 60's. It only got maybe 3-4mpg. Diesels are just more efficient at this time.

The high price is only due to taxes.

If so, then why are the oil companies reporting such large profits?

Massive volume, also all the petro-chemicals they sell from the same barrel of crude used to make our diesel.

Dang, you shot down their argument about it all being because of taxes.

Gas Engines cant do serious work like diesel.....think locomotives...pulling a heavy load a gas engine wont cut it

Diesel is not waste or a byproduct. It used to be, but as soon as a market was developed for it, it quit being waste.

yes as diesel became more popular it is out selling GAS so this whole "diesel is left over after they refine gas" is out....It actually cost more to refine strictly for diesel than to use the byproduct left over from gas, well you say why not make more gas to get the diesel, then gas would be even cheaper, the ole shelf life of gas, evaporation would cost them tons of gallons not used or sold. they cant do that! I did a paper on this exact subject 1 year ago and a lot of old statements are just not true any more.

Please explain not the popularity but the cost of diesel. It should not cost more, so enlighten me.

Popularity of any product figures heavily in determining cost. Supply and demand.
