I got my cdl-b, no experience.

I would like to go otr.

I keep seeing everyone say, "its so hard to get experience unless you wanna go otr."

I wanna go otr! I can't find a job using my cdl-b going otr with no experience. I know there are jobs where you are second seat or partner. Thats the job I would like to get.

How come I keep seeing everyone act like they are easily finding otr jobs and not taking them?? I keep seeing people say those are the only jobs they can find. Well. I must not be looking in the right places. Because I have been job seeking for over a month now and no luck yet.

    Am I missing something?

The biggest thing I think you are missing is the first letter of the alphabet. A

    You have a CDL-B not A.

That will no doubt be your biggest obstacle. Most OTR jobs require you to have a CDL-A.

Going OTR is the best way to obtain experience because you will travel more miles in a day. And that equals "experience". This site is full of information on how to go about getting your "A" and then getting experience.

    Good Luck.

I am interested in getting my cdl-a but at this time I can't make that investment. Even if I have to gain employment in another field so be it right now. Because my immediate future needs a job with a paycheck.

But, once I start earning a paycheck again wherever it may come from, I am planning on continuing on and earning the cdl-a.

But, still, com'on, there are cdl-b jobs out there right?

I should also say, when I do searches I do the searches for cdl-b posts. So I find forums and postings where people are referencing their cdl-b license not the cdl-a. So usually, when I read the stuff about otr, it is in reference to a cdl-b job.

  6. Take a look at Expediter and Hot Shot Trucking Forum. I am sure somebody there can help you.

Not exactly. OTR, means hauling something other than people, which is what most of the jobs that only require a Class-B. There are jobs in the heavy construction industry where a Class-B might fulfill the requirements, such as driving a dump truck. There's also delivery types, driving straight trucks, like delivering lumber for a local lumber company, parts for an auto-parts store, or furniture or appliances. Most all of these are not going to require you drive across the country. They're considered local, not OTR.

There are definitely CDL-B jobs out there. But very few of them are going to be OTR. Definitely less than 5% of all CDL-B jobs will be OTR and possibly less than 2%.

You don't have to make any investment. There are companies that will get you a license for free as long as you're willing to sign a 2 year contract with them.

Now why would ya tell some one that for? I know its true , but it's such a bad deal it should be illegal!
Sure ya get a cdl and a "job" .25cpm and hopefully 2500 miles a week!:biggrin_25523: Then when ya get close to completing the contract the Co . starves ya out and then you have to pay them $5-6 GRAND!:biggrin_25524: Bad idea in most cases.
To the OP it's already been said about hot-shots, also check around town you'll find something.

    RickG Thanks this.
