In other words you assumed that the trailer was hooked properly and took off without checking for yourself?

Yes. The owner said it was good to go. I tried to do a vi and he said get in the truck and go. That was 29 yrs ago. I never made that mistake again, ever.

I have made this comment before and still believe it to be true. Other than a flat tire, roadside breakdowns can very seldom be detected in a pretrip. The things that put you roadside just usually happen with little warning.

The company im at now you have to do a pre and post trip. There's birds there that will tell the boss if you don't.Also if a certain driver sees you thumping the tires with their foot he will tell the company. The company won't do anything as long as you're checking those tires. But that's not the point, some drivers have nothing better to do but mind other people's business.

You're very observant, I think many of us have made the same observation...I see people do more of a walk around at the unmanned mandatory truck stops on mountain tops than I do in the mornings...Better late than never I guess...

When I started I 'shirked' on a few pre-trips until I got pulled over right after NOT doing one and had 2 lights out on a trailer, 100% avoidable, no excuse(no good ones at least)...I was so pissed at myself and the EMBARRASSMENT of that helped me to create the habit of doing it everyday now...I can't let that happen again, if a light goes out after I leave, so be it, I'll know I checked...It also helped me during an inspection, he wrote up a taillight out on my tractor, right on my log I had wrote "tail light dim, needs replacing", I showed him that(as he had logs inside office) and we went out to see on tractor and wallah, being daytime, he couldn't see it because it was faint, not failed, no writeup now!...It's just not worth not doing it...
