I started my day yesterday morning at 0730, I made a delivery at osf in Warren, OH. My appointment time was 8, got there at 8 and checked in, the guy told me the protocol for unloading, so I followed what he said, I sat there for an hour before I got unloaded, which is no big deal.
After I got unloaded dispatch told me to head to butler pa to pick up 4 shotgun coils, appointment at 1130, made it by 1115, pulled into door 4 and 3rd truck back. I didn't pull out until 1509.
I used two chains through the eye for my forward and rearward, and then two straps over each. It also didn't help that my lumber tarp didn't cover the front eye of the front coil so I had to pull out a cheater.
To be honest, It didn't feel like I was taking a long time, in fact I thought I had a good flow going on until they started to pull us outside to finish.
I use snap binders, and tried to space them with just enough room for my chains so I could only have used one tarp, buy that didn't pan out.
I'm asking for advice, what could I have done to have gotten out with only 1.5hrs of securment and tarping?
Why has it taken me so long to secure and tarp? Help!

He may have had coil tarps that been pre/cut to cover coils in a few min?

It's common for those places to have people pull out with little or no securement and finish outside, especially when there are other trucks outside waiting to get loaded.
Speed will come on its own in time. It seems when you try to rush too much things can take longer to do, stuff doesn't fall into place the first time as often. I wouldn't worry about it, you'll get it down.
Maybe they guy behind you was fast because that all he hauls or maybe he didn't use corner protection, lol. I noticed one guy doing that with an aluminum coil.Dominick253, Canned Spam, TripleSix and 2 others Thank this. -
I have been at this for a couple years and some days it still takes forever like the load i just pull 16 pallets 2 straps per row so 16 straps and edge protection took 2 hours but 1 i wont rush it and 2 had to fight frozen straps and 3° temps i dont hang wait till i am frozen to get in and warm up. Lol
Same setup last week took 30min.
Practice will increase speed just dont worry about time at that point make sure its secure period no matter how long it takes.Highway Sailor, Diesel Dave, HalpinUout and 4 others Thank this. -
I'm paranoid. So that makes me slow. I'm doing the math in my head, which way should I turn the tarps to cover the load, did I recconnect the neck properly, is my 5th wheel locked? Did I leave anything on the deck?
Get in the truck and it's more second guessing. Did you check the 5th wheel? What time is it? Can I make it out before the traffic jam? How should I run this? I need some food now. Did I leave anything on the deck?catalinaflyer, Highway Sailor, passingthru69 and 2 others Thank this. -
I can walk around the trailer several times & still pull over just to check it one more time if it just doesn't feel right.

When it comes to securing and tarping a load.
NEVER worry about the other guy.
Do your job, do a good job and do it at your pace.
You will find that you are sometimes faster or slower than the next driver.
Then some days are just that.....a day.
Speed comes in time, practice makes you better.
Used to worry about that too. Then I discovered why one driver was so fast at getting rolling, his damage claims are the highest in the company, both for freight and equipment.
Well it was until he lost a load. Not enough securement.
I think they are still in court over that one.barroll, Dominick253, Highway Sailor and 2 others Thank this.
