When I sign in at a mill I ask the clerk the width/weights of the coils l'm picking up. That way while im waiting for the coils Ican set up my bunks and chains and get your straps loosened up if your using them. If you do that you should be able to keep up to the crane and chain them as they bring them. Like the others side it just takes practice and common sense. Watch other guys load you'll see things to copy and things not to lol. Btw if the guy behind you is in a real hurry. He'll come help you! lol

Securing and tarping is one of those things that you think you will never get the hang of or get faster with. As time goes on you kind of forget about it and get a rhythm.
Then one day as you're working on a load you suddenly realize that for the last month you haven't stressed over getting it done and it looks good.
It just takes time and practice.

Going on 18 years and I'm still waiting for that day. guess I'm just to anal retentive about my tarps. this load I'm on took me over two hours to tarp. 1 8ft drop, two 16x24 tarps, and a smoke tarp for the rear cap. Over one hundred bungees and 50 feet of rope.

I want my securement and tarping to look good and im not afraid to say it does but I don't get stressed out about how long it takes me or who's faster. I used to but no more.

That's how I am too. It takes as long as it takes. Not a minute less nor a minute more. but when I leave, the freight is not shifting, and the tarp is not flapping or ballooning up.

Sorry for the late response guys, been a long day! I understand that time will make me better, and I will never rush anything, I'll go the extra mile. I loaded tonight in butler Indiana and only took me 1.5hrs with two suicide coils, and tarp. Im now on an off ramp off 80/49 in Ohio, ran out of hours due to the rest area being closed and couldn't park.

I'd suggest you also try to improve your trip planning skills. Parking on an off ramp is a good way to get killed.

Part of trip planning is having a second and third option planned. what if the rest area had been opened, but full?
You gotta plan on stopping with enough spare time to make the next spot if your original spot is full.
You need to master this concept if you ever plan on getting into over dimension freight.

    Highway Sailor Thanks this.
