Why is common sense not taught?

I disagree. While your statement is popular, I do think that what we often refer to as common sense can be taught. I know my dad and mom certainly drilled key concepts into my head (and my bottom side), like knowing that I'm not the only person in the world and therefore I need to pay attention to what other people around me need and want. They took the time to explain situations and the reason why being "polite" was often more than just being kind to other people, it was also to help make way for myself AND a way to always "have my eyes open" and thinking ahead.

This goes along with the "Have a Plan. Work the Plan." concept I was taught when I first got into trucking. Put yourself in a situation that will make the next step easier, whether it is setting up for a back, parking in a place that allows you to start your setup easier, parking out of the way so you don't have to constantly move to make way, or doing your pre trip plan.

 

As I was told by a very old man when I was just about 6 years old, talking about the idiot neighbors next to him - you can't teach common sense as much as you can't fix stupid.

His neighbors were trying to paint their house in the first week of March when it was really cold, they tried to speed up the process of painting the house by heating up the paint thinner on the stove so it would flow better - it blew out the windows for the entire block.

 

... you do have that aspect right, Ridgeline... Darwin does play a role.

 

Situation awareness. It's a simple concept.

 

This thread started out with "sleepers" blocking lanes and lots? To me that points out the parking issue with big rigs. It's not getting easier.

 

Common sense dictates that common sense cannot be taught. Why didn't you know.....

It is very simple, throughout time man and science has been looking for a solution, so far we have yet to find a way to fix stupid. Stupid is just something that you cant put a wrench on and fix it sometimes a wrench up the side of the head may provide some short term attention but it doesn't fix stupid.

A person either has horse sense, or they do not................................................ Its something your born with .... or without ..........
