I like that ^^^^^^, and agree, i have a saying i use, goes like this, " Your mind should be a sponge to soak up knowledge and you are never to old to or to young to do so, you can be young and learn things from the old and vise versa if you are not open to this than you are ignorant and living in a bubble ". :yes2557:

This has nothing to do with common sense, you expect people to know the small intracasies of places they're going to for the first time? You said you did OTR, sounds like you forget where you came from, every place is a new experience and all we have to go on is proper signage or helpful local drivers which happens never.

^^^^^A quick piece of advice to newer drivers going somewhere for the 1st time---Don't be afraid to park and walk...may seem like a PITA--but can keep you out of alot of trouble--Ive done OTR LTL for a lot of years and routinely end up in a large city somewhere at a stop I am totally unfamiliar with.....won't be the first time--truck sat at nearby shopping center--while I walked 3 blocks up the street to figure out just what i was gonna have to do--to get in there safely....

No matter how new you are though, when is parking across the loading bays and trailers EVER a good idea? Or parking in the same direction of the trailers, centered in the lot blocking traffic, or parking in the exit...

You can go somewhere for the first time and figure out that these aren't where you leave your truck. I was taught right from the start when I started driving to stay parallel to the building, on the other side, or in the huge empty lot, or in a parking spot that's not a loading dock.

Staying out of the way isn't hard.

That is good advice. Before I went OTR, I drove locally for a small food company and it wasn't unusual for them to send me to some restaurant or golf course, club etc. that wasn't a regular customer and some of them would be in high congestion/populated areas with tough to get at little alleys or docks for unloading.

One stop I made occassionally was at a golf club that had a restaurant built on a hill with an upper and lower parking lots. The first time I went there I blasted right up the hill and found myself with a small parking lot and 53 foot trailer I couldn't get turned around. I had to back down that hill about 900' to turn around in the lower lot. After that, I would stop in the lower lot and walk up to the clubhouse and they would send some kid in a golf cart down to get their order off the truck. Lesson learned.

When I was a dispatcher (for the police) a few years ago, we came up with a saying...

"there is no such thing as common courtesy or common sense because not enough people have either for it to be considered common"

Common sense cannot be taught, it is innate; one has it, or not. Behavior can be taught if the student is willing to learn and adjust as necessary.

    You can't teach 'common sense'.
    You can't fix 'stupid'.

    IQ is the common denominator.
