I was introduced to one of these loads trash loads by Landstar, the pay sucked. Wait as these shippers figure out there are cheaper drivers, they’ll take it when time comes and these drivers won’t have that gravy anymore.

They quoted me $550 for 244 round trip two a day. Hauling wood chips 44k weight. I said no thanks.

There you go, you answered your own question. You have a major advantage with a former broker who knows other brokers. You're basically getting contract rates.

I'm averaging about 1.80 all miles still, but I have to really work the phones for it. I run load board only with about 10 good contact with Landstar and a few other big 3PL's.

Every time I get frustrated I remind myself that I wanted to do this by me for me. I don't want a dispatcher. I've got a great wife of 25 years and retired from a company after 25. I don't want ANYONE to question why I feel like driving or not driving today, why I feel like only pulling 10k, why I don't want to haul this or that, etc.

You've found a niche that works for you. That's what makes you successful in trucking and makes a person stay with it.

Oh, and just where are these truck stops where you talk to people? Every driver I see at a truckstop is jabbering in some foreign language on his headset while he walks, pays, uses the bathroom, brushes his teeth. It's freakin' epedimic. I don't talk to anyone there.

    What was the agent code?

I've taken my lumps, everyone does pretty much, building a dick head file, of people I don't even answer the phone for.

There's a lot of agents that speak the Punjabi too, and they are also going to increase.

I am getting hammered by customers in two Midwest cities with Russians and middle eastern trying to under cut my rates by 60%. You can't get that cheap and remain sustainable. The customers are getting pissed that they have these people going in and telling them they wil beat their contracted carrier prices.

Yesterday one of my drivers told me that a broker offered her a load for $1.35 and when she told the broker to get bent, he said "ill just give it to the white Volvo crowd, they will cover it" she later got a $2.15/mile load to move back to St. Louis.

I have noticed lately that the new equipment the newbie get rich in trucking crowd has bought the last couple years is getting real ratty looking and they are always hammer down .
98% of what I haul is contract reefer freight and hasn't slowed down a bit and always pre planned.
The rate increases stopped last fall tho .
I'm not worried ...the herd will thin and those that gouged brokers a year or 2 ago are reaping what they sowed .
